Yeah, in the same way at Le Mans. Slightly off topic, but going along the theme.... Did a track weekend at Le man. Couldn't believe it when there was wine for everyone with the lunches. The Brit group stayed off it, but the French were certainly tucking into it and then out on track in the afternoon! Fortunately we were running in our own group.
On the subject of Le Mans. two years back a French marshal fell over on the Sunday morning badly cutting his head. He was taken to the medical centre inside the circuit and the doctor, smelling alcohol, took a sample. It was 2.8gms, way over any limit and marshals are supposedly not allowed to drink during the race.
Came the 24 hour truck race in September and all chief marshals that had been at Le Mans were summoned to the tower for a debriefing, during which the above story was recounted. At the end of the debriefing the marshals were then invited ot have lunch in the adjoining room. Now remember these marshals are also on duty, and when the door was thrown open at each round table for six there were six bottles of wine and along the wall whisky and Pastis à volonté, as they say in french. Indeed, some were seen calling for more wine before they went back on post.
