Hello
So my shiny 2000 xkr black convertible arrived this evening
One owner 59k FSH
New SS exhaust and new 20 inch wheels shod on Pirrelis
Steel tensioners .

Can't wait to have a proper drive ,the torque is just amazing even low down
I've had a 4,6l TVR wedge but this feels to pull so much better and of course bits don't fall off all the time .
In fact I'd say it pulls even better than a cosworth BDR Caterham I had ,but not as nimble through the twisty bits .Lot more comfy and more practical .Just feels rather special all round .

I have a few questions if anyone can help

What are the recommended tyre pressures for the 20 inch Pirrelis ?
285/30 ZR20 rears
255/35 ZR 20 fronts

Also where can I find the paint code as would like to have a paint stick for when I get inevitable stone chips as I am mostly driving on country roads .Apprently Halfords will make one up if you give them the code . Is there anywhere on line who will supply this

Finally the spare fob doesn't seem to work despite replacing the batteries .I believe this maybe because its lost its memory ,so how do I reprogram the key fob ,is that a dealer job and what will they usually charge ,its just the spare fob. Any other ideas to get this to work ?

Regards

By the way, what is a neophyte? Sounds scary.

Have fun, I am sure that you will enjoy it. Post some pics as well?

You will find, if you haven't already that these are generally massively underrated cars. They are fast, comfortable and if they are properly sorted out and on decent tyres like the Pirellis they can handle too. Maybe not like a Caterham, but they aren't afraid of a little oppo.

Not sure about the fob - is it a battery issue? What black is it, there is a solid black and also anthracite, which is a very attractive metallic with gold and green in it. Should be able to buy it from a dealer.

Neophyte = newbie or beginner -ie me wrt owning a Jag
Mind you i do recall my dad having an XJ6 which he kindly leant me when i was a young student for a hot date -did the trick as i recall
I'll post some pics -i think its plain Jane black but looks good
Looks like ill have to take fob to dealer to sort out -hopefully they can zap it and recode .
Really looking forward to hot weather -when it finally arrives in Scotingland .

docip,

I have an S-Type 4.2 V8 SE, 2003. I had the same key fob problem as you: one worked the other stopped doing so. I went to the usual JMD with both keys expecting to leave it there for some time. However, the service manager came out and showed me the simple fix. Start with the working key and operate it several times, then use both keys together a few times. The keys start to "talk to each other" and the non working key picks up the code. Bingo! That was 2 years sgo and all's been well since. Give it a go!

We had a neophyte move in just down the street, "live and let live" I said - but once word got out it was all pitch forks and flaming torches...

I just did that with a new garage door opener, worked a treat.

PS Make sure that you exercise the roof reasonably frequently to keep in in good serviceable condition. It also pays to keep the battery healthy on these cars. Have you changed the gearbox oil? It says sealed for life, but that is Jag-speak for sealed until out of warranty. Is your suspension in good working order? You have probably already done this but it is also worthwhile to get underneath it and check the condition of the claggy bits, particularly the folded flanges below the front footwells which are prone to rusting. I have never seen a 4.0 that didn't have some issue here, but it isn't expensive to fix provided you tackle it promptly.

Have a look here about reprogramming the fob: http://m.jaguarforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4...

Re tyre pressure, for my Detroit 20" I was told 32 up front and 30 rear.

Just managed to get hold of the mechanic who has looked after this car -he's the local jaguar independent old school mechanic -he wasn't there when i purchased the car on a weekend .
Anyway its all very good news because he told me that this one had a replacement jaguar engine at 22k miles under warranty in 2004 with the new steel liners and steel tensioners etc -i'm embarrassed to say I actually didn't spot that in the service book when i was glancing at it before purchase with the dealer [he specializes in old jags] -silly me eh .
He also told me that he's had the car on the ramp several times and its absolutely clean with no issues of rust anywhere especially in the footwells -in fact he told me its one of the cleanest examples hes ever seen -this maybe because its Isle of man car and maybe they don't use salt . He also told me hes recently checked the geo when it was last serviced in March .Anyway that's all reassuring to know . Also nice to know someone knowledgeable will be looking after my car -they have all the tools and diagnostic stuff but charge a reasonable £39/h labour .
My battery is on an Accumate charger and is showing a nice healthy green light .i will get the hood up and down and suggested -i was planning to leave it down in the garage for the summer but will keep the mechanism working .
What do folk think about paying to join the XEC club -is it worth it for someone living in the frozen north ?

result -so i gave the fob connections a good clean with an alcowipe -and bingo its now all working fine -clearly didn't lose its memory after all -happy days -all i need now is the wretched weather to improve -its been hail stoning today on and off and the temp gauge in my car was 1 degree C -eeek -then again we do have lots of empty roads up here in Angus .i was in londonshire yesterday and it was like being in a different country -shirt sleeves -ive got two sweaters on today as its freezing -good job the jag has heated seats eh

Ok here's a real numpty question
So how you attach a trickle charger to the battery in the boot without leaving the boot interior lights on ,ie without having to shut the boot and risking fracturing the wire ? Ie is there anyway of switching off the boot light while at the same time having the boot open ? How do you keep the car on trickle ,can you use the cigar lighter to charge and perhaps feed the wire through window or leave the door open .

The cigar lighter connection is not connected without the ignition on. Yes just close the boot over the wires there is more than enough padding so they won't get severed
