Hi everyone,

My insurance and breakdown cover I will be due for renewal at some point in July.

I have been in Mannings UK for both insurance and European Break down cover for the last 3 years (since I have the Chimaera 500) and have been shopping around each time before renewal, but nobody seems to be able to beat what I am paying: Circa 500 pounds, London based, on a classic insurance, fully comp, including track days, on a 5,000 miles / year (car garaged).

The thing is, last year when I renewed the insurance they told me that they would not be able to include the European Break down cover, the car was 16 years old (1996) and after looking into it they managed to do the break down cover for an extra year, but he told me at the time that next year the car would be 17 years old and they would not be able to cover me.

Question: does anyone know of a good European break down cover for a 17 year old “classic” TVR…?

It looks like I will carry on insuring with Mannings, but will have to look for a separate provider for the break down cover…

Luckily in 3 years I have not had to call the break down people once, but i guess this is not something that influences the fact that they will cover you or will not cover you…?

Any tips would be welcome.

Frenchie.

Hi Frenchie, Seems strange as ours is a 94 (18 years) and Mannings included 40 day Europe cover in our policy, most companies include Europe now as we are part of it now, unless yours is for extended cover?.
Hope you get it sorted
Jamie
Sorry just opened my eyes properly and saw its breakdown cover you want.
Im sure RAC, AA and Green Flag will accomodate your needs (for a price)
As I said before hope you get a good quote and dont have to use it.
Jamie

If you haven't made too many mods then classic line is a good choice.

When I was with them last year (before a few mods) their cover included all of Europe (they mentioned some other thing you also get for Spain - didn't really listen as I wasn't going to Spain). A good price too, fully comp for me and the wife, with a 20k agreed price was just over £300.

I get my full international breakdown by paying for my banking with Barclays, covers all of our cars and any car you are travelling in. I also get a load of other stuff thrown in, like gadget, phone insurance, etc costs me £17.50 a month... It certainly works though, I've been recovered, ehmmm, a few times. Including having our family Espace recovered back from Paris a couple of years ago after the big ends went... Common prob with Renault Diesel engines apparantly....

Ive been told that the cover supplied by banks etc is a very basic cover. There are probably various sorts of cover they offer, but its worth checking what they cover, just in case, better safe than sorry.
What you dont want to find is that all they will do tow you to the nearest garage after a serious problem, then you are left at the mercy of a relatively unknown car, in a foreign country being worked on by people that have never worked on a TVR, even more so with a "T" car or Cerbera.
Not wanting to poo poo the banks generosity but worth checking the level of cover offered.

I took out ADAC cover last year just ahead of the Le Mans Classic after recommendation on here. I dropped them an email with my phone number and asked for someone who spoke English to give me a call. To my pleasant surprise the call was received in under an hour with a lovely sounding German lady on the phone who took my details and then sent the cards etc through about a week later thumbup

They were over £80 cheaper for their annual cover than the AA wanted to extend my UK cover for a 1 week timeframe eek

Another for ADAC... annual cover for less than the AA's 2 week

Mine's 18 years old. Have had no problem with the AA in previous years, but this year my Caravan Club breakdown cover (Green Flag) have said they will switch the beemer (towcar) to my TVR for a european trip in july, sub "old car" supplement. Have yet to find out how much that is!

Take out personal breakdown cover with Aviva and you are covered for any car that you are travelling in (you don't even have to be the driver). I've done this for a number of years paying the premium based on a eurobox and, when required, calling them out to the Tiv. As Aviva used to own RAC, that's who they send out to help you.

Certainly the Barclays one is excellent.... I've had great service, transport to garage of choice or home & as I said above I've been brought all the way back from Paris. Its certainly worth considering....

I have had great service from Barclays, but you need to check the clauses as I believe it covers only cars under 10yrs old now.

I've been with the adac for a few years now and I must say the service is excellent. As a member you'll also have free access to info over toll charges, stupid law changes like the france breathalyzer thing and all sorts of useful travel info. Just one phone call before even setting off on an EU trip is a real comforter!

ADAC for me. Been with then since 2007.
Twice had to be rescued back to the UK, once in Germany and once in southern France.
Both times very efficient (as you would expect) and both times provided with offer of a hotel for the night and rental car.
For the French incident, they gave me a rental for the 4 day slow drive up to Calis and had another waiting in Dover on the other side smile
Apart from that they have, on a number of occasions helped me free of charge during the time I was in the AA and even when I had left the AA.
On that occasion when the guy offered me full European cover, I joined.
Great attitude and very friendly.
Brilliant and all for €80,- per year. (or was it €79,50 ?)
