This Sigma lens looks very interesting. Its not confirmed that they will be making it yet, but judging by some of the other lenses in their new ART series its a real possibility.
If the quality is on a par with their 30mm 1.4 it would be an absolute cracker. They have also recently announced a 18-35 1.8 zoom which is certainly an interesting sounding lens, although not one i'd buy. They seem to be on a bit of a march at the moment, for us APS-C guys anyway!

Makes sense to do something like they're doing, in order to reposition themselves in the marketplace.
Making such lenses gets people to notice, and hopefully buying, which they suspect will cause a snowball effect.
Equally, if they've figured out a way to make such lenses at relatively affordable costs, then rolling out a range of lenses based is a sound way to reinvigorate sales and brand perception.

It would have to be something truly amazing to be nicer than the Canon 135mm f2. That's probably the sharpest lens I own, even wide open. Small, light, sensibly priced (compared to the wide primes), I cannot fault it. Mine gets used in preference to a 70-200 2.8 IS whenever possible.

I used a 135L for a wedding recently and it is a stunning lens.But with Sigma's recent form there is no reason to expect that this lens won't be as sharp as the Canon equivalent (i think the 30mm 1.4 beat a load of canon primes.) Combine excellent optical performance with a slightly wider aperture, image stabilisation and a cheaper price tag (I can't see them pricing a aps-c only lens the same or more then a canon L Lens), this lens could be a real winner for Sigma.
The 135L f/2 is a real beauty though...
