go through your game data and delete old games you have finished or have no intention of playing again. also, something i didnt realise. every time you play a blue ray movie disc it stores a small file on your ps3 with data about the movie. i accumulated thousands of these over the last 7 years and reclaimed a ton of disc space when i deleted them. you can also delete playstation home if you have it and dont use it like i did. that is 3gb by itself. spring clean your ps3

Don't think you can use USB as HDD game installation space. Few months ago I put a 1TB drive in mine. Relatively cheap, followed a YT video, and did it all start to stop in 2 hours.
Get it done.
That sounds perfect! Trouble is I have no idea how to do it! Are there companies out there that can do its. Any help appreciated!Get it done.

I have done this. Bioshock infinite seems to have taken up pretty much all my memory!
It's not memory, that's something else.
Replacing the HDD is incredibly simple, but will require you to back up whatever saved data you've got to preserve your saved games etc.

looks to be a simple enough guide.
You'll need a 2.5" drive - any should work. There will certainly be people you could pay to do it, but given how straight-forward it is it'd be a waste of money (especially since it's an old PS3).

you can install a sata drive as big as you want. as long as it is 2.5.
if you are anywhere near oxford or banbury i will install it for you for free.
That's very generous but I have spoken to someone at work who is happy to do it. Thank you though.if you are anywhere near oxford or banbury i will install it for you for free.
I am now looking for 2.5 storage units on amazon.

Thanks all.
Have ordered this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Scorpio-5400RPM-Internal-C...
Being fitted next week.
Quick question, which may sound obvious. Do I have do download everything off current hard drive on to external or just saved games? For example do I transfer any downloaded games to USB first?
In the past I have tried putting saved games from one ps3 on to another and the ps3 have not recognised them. Could that happen when I change the memory?

What I dud when I upgraded the drive in mine was use the built in backup option on the ps3 to do a full backup. If you've a big enough spare external drive it's easy enough. However I didn't have a spare at the time so it got slightly more complicated. I had a cheap USB enclosure for 2.5" drives that I put the new drive in. Did the backup (takes a while)
Copied all files and folders to my Pc. Remove the old ps3 drive, stuck it in the enclosure, formatted and copied the files from my PC this drive. Installed the new drive in the ps3 and then did the restore using the original ps3 drive in the enclosure.
With the benefit of hindsight I probably wouldn't bother again, I'd just backup games saves (or get PS+ temporarily and use the cloud thingy to save my backup files) all the other stuff like downloaded games, game data and game installs can easily be done again.
