Fire Alarm at Three Bridges Signal Box

Well luckily the experts that run are rail network haven't decided to put all their eggs in one basket and therefore all trains in Sussex weren't stopped by a fire alarm at the Three Bridges signal box this morning ............ oh wait.
What a brilliant schme this is, my train doesnt go within 25 miles of Three Bridges but still didnt run. Chaos for ages now I guess.

There was a little more to it than that from the news that reached our place, but being an expert yourself you probably know that already.
And 25 miles is absolutely nothing in railway terms, so it's quite possible for a snag that far away to affect your train, but again, you probably know that.

I visited that signalling centre last summer. The sight from the roof of 377s banging past at 80 is quite impressive.
Good job they're building a new one (covering an even bigger region) just across the way.
Probably cheaper and more efficient but does show that when things go wrong bigger isn't always better.

I am not an expert merely a passenger, albeit possibly a more informed passenger than most purely from taking an interest. I assumed this morning that the cancellation of our trains must have meant that our signals are controlled from Three Bridges but apparently they aren't yet. They are actually controlled from Selhurst and Oxted apparently.And 25 miles is absolutely nothing in railway terms, so it's quite possible for a snag that far away to affect your train, but again, you probably know that.

It does lead to questioning the wisdom of signal boxes controlling vast areas especially as it appears there is no back up. And yet again Southern disappeared into information chaos unable to tell passengers what was happening.
