So here's the thing, i start up my s3 it sounds happy, i drive it 20 miles no probs, smooth....!
I stop for 30 mins to do some shopping or sightseeing then i start it up again and drive and then pah...! car starts to stutter at speed like petrol starvation. This seems to happen every time i drive it to some degree or another.
I cant understand why this only happens after I have been driving for some time. The ignition light at start up does not normally go out until i give it the beans past 3000 revs and today it lit up on the way home before stalling twice. when this happens the revs rise and fall at tickover as if the auto choke is trying to cut in.
Sorry for the long mail people, but this is really spoiling the S for me at the moment, it feels as if when i go out in it I don't enjoy it because i know it will falter on the way back. I love this car but its driving me mad!!!

The ignition light suggests an alternator problem, so does the idle fluctuation. Check the wires at the alternator and battery, and if possible the voltage across the battery when it is misbehaving. It could just be the v belt slipping - check the tension.

+1 , if the battery is getting low its affecting the fuel pump, I suspect.

I had a similar (ish) problem...Could it be a throttle pot.....engine stuttering?
