what 'basics' should I get?
Discussion
I have just bought a Meteor grey Porsche 997 turbo. I will be getting together a wash kit, but as its been years since I have had a car I would bother keeping clean I'm not sure where to start.
I am not going to spend big on this, so what should I start with, and what order do you do stuff in?!

I'd start with...
Autoglym Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner
Autoglym Super Resin Polish.
A noodle or lambswool wash mitt
Some microfibre drying towels and cloths. The Kent Drying Towels (the big yellow ones) are terrific.
Halfords usually have their 3 for 2 promotion on at this time of year on car cleaning liquids (cheapest item free).
There are other items you could get such as tyre shine, alloy wheel cleaner, black plastic trim care, paste wax, leather cleaner, etc., depending on your exact needs and tastes.

I think I used this chap before, he was really helpful. I will give them a call, thanks. http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog/car-care-a...
So, I went to B+Q for some silicone for the bathroom and came out with Autoglym shampoo/conditioner, super resin polish and extra gloss protection, and a big yellow Kent brand drying towel. I will be getting a lambswool wash mitt, and a microfibre wash mitt for the wheels, and some Autoglym fast glass.
I already have two buckets, and will use a square of sponge with the tyre dressing.
What do I put the super resin polish on with and then what do I use to buff off? Is it just the supermarket microfibre towels for buffing duties and those little round pads to put the polish on with? B+Q had Kent pads with a black handle bit on them, are these any good? I have read that after the super resin polish, I could do another coat then put the extra gloss protection on and leave it for a while before buffing off, then perhaps even another layer of the extra gloss protection after 24 hours. Is this overkill?
What have I missed? I like having a shiny car, but I don't think I could go overboard like some, so would this method be good for my car?
One thing I remember hearing years ago that using super resin polish too many times can damage paint?

The little yellow circular meguiars sponge applicators are great for applying polishes, you can get them in Halfords.
I don't use the Autoglym range, but my understanding is that the SRP is abrasive, so using will remove a tiny bit of clear coat, so over use could cause problems. I only tend to polish my cars once a year, but add wax every month or so.
The only gap in what you've suggested is something to protect the wheels.

Sorry, but no way is that true. Several passes with a powered DA machine and the polish of your choice may remove two microns or less. Hand worked SRP won't be any trouble.
Okay, got most of the stuff apart from cloths to remove polish and a wash mit.
I cant get mail order in time, so it will be high street, Halfords, B+Q, Asda etc..... Whats the best wash mit? I have seen Kent ones but these seem to be a bit thin, Halfords lambswool and megs microfibres. Any other ideas?
I will be getting some yellow megs pads to put the polish on, but what do I use to take it of, and can this be the same towels to use for autoglym extra gloss protection? I would have thought (thinking always gets me into trouble) any microfibre towel would do the trick, like the ones where you get 10 or so for £3-5?
