I am thinking of buying a series 2a for a weekend toy and occasional snow use. I am new to classic land rovers and would like some pointers. I am not mechanically minded but understand that these will take a little keeping on the road (i have a tvr so know that!!). Will 4k buy one that is pretty sorted. I like the canvas tops, are hard tops/cabs easily converted? Am I mad to look at them?

Go for as original as possible, without going stupid with the budget. Factory fresh completely unmolested SIIs are rocketing in value.

True, but most of it can be done yourself or failing that, aftermarket spares and services eclipse any other make.

Yes. You'll get a very solid, original every day drive for that.

Yes. Spanners and a few hours is all it takes. You'll need to source a few bits beyond the actual tilt itself to convert to rag top, but it's all out there......

Thanks for the info, any known pitfalls I need to avoid?

Chassis rot.
Bulkhead corroded to oblivion.
Excessively clunky drive train, steering and/or suspension.

That's nice for you. What's it got to do with someone wanting a Series II though?

Mine is smile

Had it for 5 years now and wouldn't part with it. As has been said, chassis and bulkhead rot are the biggest problems, but it's time rather than cost that is the barrier to sorting these out if you are handy with a welder - unless you go for galvanised replacements.
