Saw this on the canal side near my house a couple of days ago. It looks like a wader, but what is it?

Not enough white on the breast for me Eric, I'm sticking with oystercatcher.

I looked t the RSPB site and considered a number of different snipe, but they all have more white on the Chet than the youngster pictured.

how many oysters will be in that canal? or is this a canal with attached cockle beds?

beak is much thinner than an oystercatcher, for insects rather than smashing shells open

the one pictured as 'juveline oystercatcher' appears to also be a redshanks

Oh bugger, just got a selection of books down off the shelf and I'm befuddled.

OP - what size would you estimate? (compare it to a bird you know) ... and did it make any sound that you heard?

Ermm.........Perhaps I should have mentioned that it is the Lancaster canal, which is only a few hundred metres from the tidal reaches of Morecambe Bay.

Looking at both birds, it is a close call, and I'm no expert.....

Google images would suggest the redshank has longer legs than the suspect....

I would have said Redshank if it wasn't for that photo you found.

Both photos look identical - bloody good spot smile

assuming the photo you found IS actually a juvenile oystercatcher

search google images for 'juvenile oystercatcher' none of the others have orange legs, or the same beak, or the same eyes

I don't think it's an oystercatcher.

Young oystercatchers look just as you'd expect, like young oystercatchers:

As far as I can tell the whole "jizz" is just wrong for an oystercatcher.

Does look like a redshank, assume the legs look short purely because it's really hunkered down a bit?
