I have just bought a Saab 9-3 185bhp convertible and am looking to pick up a scanner which can turn off the EML and tell me any stored codes etc. The engine is the the B204L Trionic 7 and is a 2000 Year model. Can anyone tell me if it is OBD2 compliant and if so what are the best scanners out??

I'm pretty sure that it is. I know someone with the lower powered version of that engine in a 9-3 and his definitely is. It was compulsory from 2001 for petrol engined cars in the EU but many manufacturers adopted it early.

have a look for your 16 pin diagnostic connector, it should be within easy access of the drivers seat(usually under the steering column area). If its there it may be marked up obd 2 but its hard to say, my guess is that it is.
A cheap and cheerful reader should do the job you want, have a look at the u480 on ebay. Ive got one of these and its connected to some cars that a more expensive unit wouldnt.
Some cars are fussy with code readers so you can only try, if you go more expensive autel stuff is hard to beat. There is a supplier called gendan online that are very good.

The easiest solution (if you have a smart phone) is probably a blue-tooth one. Then you can just leave it plugged in and simply connect your phone to it when you want to get data off.

Yep - it is compatible. I used a cheapo bluetooth ELM327 compatible reader from ebay along with the Torque app on my android phone with my 2000 9-3 (same engine).
