So, Emeli One-Trick is, apparently, in at least one respect better than the Beatles:

Scottish singer Emeli Sande has beaten a record set by The Beatles for the most consecutive weeks in the UK's top 10 chart for a debut album.

Her album Our Version of Events has spent 63 weeks at the top end of the UK's Official Album Chart.

The Beatles' album Please Please Me had held the record for almost 50 years.
I really liked "Heaven" but for me it was the only track on that album. I wonder how many other people bought it, played it once and shelved it? I can't quite get past how many times she repeated the same dirge at the Olympics (granted possibly not by her own choice!).

I really cannot abide her. Paul McCartney must be soiling himself.

The big difference will come in 50years when no-one remembers who she was, or the album.

How many copies of each have been sold?

When I heard this on the news it was my first thought and Bill Turnbull alluded to it, but they didn't say...

Appears to be no more than a half-competent karaoke singer. Hardly the future of music.

Sales figures would be interesting. I heard a quote where they said she shifted 100,000 copies in a week. I'm sure a few years back this probably wouldn't have even got her in the Top 20.

I can't look at her without conjuring up Woody Woodpecker in my mind.

Well said. Although it will not take 50 years.

I can't say I'm a huge fan of hers but seriously? ^

You might not like her music but watch this and tell me you honestly believe what you wrote:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Pfgv0d7LgY

Like I said, I'm not a fan, I haven't bought any of her stuff but I can appreciate a voice like that.

If you talking purely vocal talent I would say she has to be one of the best around at the moment in a sea of manufactured crap. FWIW I would hardly call Mcartney one of the greats when it comes to vocal talent.

And just for a bit of balance, this was the top result for Mcartney best vocal performance on YouTube:

I feel this illustrates my point nicely! wink

I didn't hear anything there to make me change my opinion. The 'over-emoting' has always been like nails on a black-board to my ears. Whiney Houston and that other one (Pariah Carey?) have spawned a whole genre of teeth-clenching sincerity, which every no-mark in every pub in the land try to replicate when karaoke comes to town.

But what do I know? I think Roger Chapman has one of the finest voices of the last 100 years (if you like the sound of a goat being strangled).

And I'm sure Ms. Sande will lose sleep knowing that her bland music does nothing for me.

That video, at the time of writing, has less than 6,000 views? Are you serious?

Paul McCartney is one of the best singers ever, he has/had a huge range of styles that he use to great effect. Compare and contrast Blackbird with Birthday.

What has the number of views got to do with anything? It's still him.

Having a huge range of styles is nothing to crow about if none of them are all that great. Sure, he can hold a tune but to call him one of the best singers ever is a little over the top I think.

I don't see why all the hate for Sande just because her album spent longer in the top ten than one by The Beatles.

As for comparing sales figures, that's just ludicrous as she's barely been around a fraction of the time The Beatles have been known & even if you compare like for like over a set period of time, when The Beatles first appeared was a way different culture regarding music back then to now so is just pointless.

I know what the poster above says about over-emoting but she's nowhere near the level of ridiculousness that Mariah, and to a lesser extent, Whitney used to do.

Long story short; to say Sande is merely a half-competent karaoke singer/has no talent/doesn't compare to a band that were first on the scene over 60-odd years ago just marks people out as touchy Beatles fan-boys.

I haven't said anything about Sande one way or the other, honestly I couldn't care less about her. I don't consider myself particularly touchy, but Beatles fan-boy? fk yes, founder member.

Just to be clear, not here it doesn't! I have c. 350 albums on my iPod, everything from Classical to rock to trance, from the Who to Chic to Plan B, etc etc etc, but I believe I'm right in saying you won't find a single Beatles track on there! (Except possibly a cover).

I just think that ES sprang into the limelight as the next huge massive wonderful thing and she's done nothing since except re-warble some VERY average tunes a thousand times each. This happened with someone else a while back, I think I even posted on it, but at present that person/group was so memorable that I've forgotten who it was!

I object to that insinuation.

I hated her long before that...

(well, OK, I probably don't hate her, but I hate her 'product'. Junk food for the ears.)

I'm not a fan of Emeli, but she does write, play and sing. Of their type her songs are OK in my opinion.
Don't actually think Paul McCartney is a great singer - though I don't think that is a deal breaker in terms of making a song deliver - I'd rather have a delivery like that than a Mariah Carey pummel the melody into submission approach

You mis-understand on more than one level. But my comment regarding sales figures still stands. It was quoted that she achieved sales figures of 100,000 in a week, which no doubt helped her stay in the charts. My assertation was that 100,000 sales, years ago, would probably have seen her enter the charts and disappear shortly thereafter. It has nothing to do with total sales, but more to do with the criteria for a chart placing. You're not comparing apples with apples.

I'm not a Beatles fan-boy at all, BTW. And you're completely correct. Paul McCarntey never dun nuffin' to compare to ES, did he? (We'll have to overlook the numerous renditions of Hey Jude he's subjected us to over the last couple of years)

"60-odd years ago"? Maths not your strong point then.

I don't see that that is relevant though is it? Sales figures can only be compared with other artists that are currently active i.e. as a percentage of total music sales, and even then it's not really a fair reflection when compared against a band from the era The Beatles were active in as, due to the internet, music fans have MUCH easier access to the music they like & an absolutely HUGE choice of artists.

A mere 100,000 may have seen her slide into obscurity a few years ago but if the other artists she is "competing" against right now are only selling 5,000, that puts her at the top of the tree. The fact The Beatles may have sold x50 that amount in the same time is irrelevant.
