This may attract a lot of face palming but bear with me:

In the previous generation of RR it was clear to see which was the top dog in the line up and which was the racier model, yet less well appointed and less imposing. Apologies to anyone easily offended but there seemed to be a more plasticky air to the RR Sport compared to its yacht-like bigger brother, especially in earlier models. Yet many swear by the RR Sport as a better more agile proposition especially as they rarely if ever do off road work.

In the new line up however I am genuinely confused as from first impressions the gap has got even smaller. The RR Sport appears to be a more cohesive piece of design, and with equally fine appointments in the interior. I prefer the pull-gearstick in the Sport to the Jaguar sourced rotary knob in the Range Rover, while the 5 + 2 seating in the Sport does give it an advantage for families even if many have pointed out the seating's compromises. But I go back to that design again - the Sport may remind people of a bigger Evoque, but it has no fake side gills, or huge long front door to contend with; neither does it have the general bloated feel of the 2013 Range.

So it begs the question, why buy the Range over the RR Sport? Is it genuinely better off road, or it is just mere wallet waving for those who can?
