Picture kinda makes it look like just bodywork damage but the front wheels aren't pointing in the right/same direction so probably has some rod damage (maybe even more I can't see). Most probably fixable but a royal pain in the buttocks and ruddy expensive. Just waiting to hear from the insurers garage now
Airbags didn't go off. Accelerating (enthusiastically) out of a roundabout and thought someone was about to step off the pavement in front of me. The slippy road conditions meant when I slammed the brakes on hard my skill levels vanished and my car slid around a bit out of control and into a small wall. No-one was hurt and I managed to limp it to my works car park where I spent the next 12.5hrs in a right mood on a nightshift.
Insurers took the car away this morning around 11/11.30 after I'd done a few phone calls and realised it would be too expensive for me to repair without insurance help. Still awaiting to hear from them as they are supposed to be calling anytime now to arrange a courtesy car after they assess the damage.
Edit: my 200th post, what a bag of s***e

Nightmare! Oh well least it looks like only the bumper and not any other panels got damaged. The scary thing is, if the same happened to my mk1, it would almost certainly be written off!
The panels don't bother me as I know they are easily fixable, it's the suspension and steering I'm worried about, in particular the rods. Got told by the insurers that the garage would be in touch with me 2 hours after they get the car. It was picked up from me nearly 5 hours ago and still no news. I did ring the garage about 50 mins ago but they just said it's still being assessed and they'd be in touch as soon as they have any news.Pant wetting time as I know they'll only give me something silly like 5k if its written off when to replace it like for like it'll cost me around 6.5k

As long as the main chassis isn't bent I'm sure you'll be fine. Even if you have bent wishbones and steering rods etc surely that wont write off a 5/6 grand car?. Still though I can imagine its not nice having to wait for the verdict. Let us know how you get on.Pant wetting time as I know they'll only give me something silly like 5k if its written off when to replace it like for like it'll cost me around 6.5k
Spoke to the repairers twice today, at lunch time they said they had sent the repair cost estimate to the insurance company and were waiting to hear back from them. Just after 4pm I called again as I hadn't heard anything and they said they were waiting on 2 or 3 more quotes but it looks as though it will be wrote off.
I'm awaiting a call in the morning to confirm things, wish they'd just give me a straight answer though as they seem to not know their a**e from their elbow.
Anyone any idea what sort of payout I should expect to get on a 56 plate with 35,500 on the clock?

Don't insurers just give you book price? Whatever they offer - dispute it, provide evidence of recently sold examples with similar miles from ebay etc, to bump up the offer.I'm awaiting a call in the morning to confirm things, wish they'd just give me a straight answer though as they seem to not know their a**e from their elbow.

Silver lining: Next time you can buy one in a decent colour

They've wrote it off. I'm going to call the insurers tomorrow and ask for them to e-mail me a full list of the repairs needed so I can look into getting it sorted by buying the car back off them. I can then weigh up that option with just getting the insurance payout and looking for something else. Maybe get a mk1 in good condition, supercharge it and keep the cash left over for something else. Alternatively I might look into spending a bit extra and get a VX220. Got a big decision to make coming up
Probably a bit too late, but you might want to think about buying the car back from the insurance company (usually around 10-15% of the payout) and going to see a decent MK-5 specialist about repairing it it.
AK (http://www.akautomotive-mx5.co.uk/) would probably be your closest specialist garage.

I did think about buying it back but my insurance valued it at more than I paid for it over a year ago so I've took the money. I've now ordered a new one, pretty much the same age, 6k less miles on the clock and I'm getting it for £400 less than the insurance payout so it hasn't worked out too bad in the end, I've made £400 and got a car with under 30k on the clock by smashing mine up.
I tried emailing the op about this but ive bought this car at a salvage auction and will be getting a mk3.5 front end (well headlight and front bumper) fitted along with a few other odds and sods like different sideskirts and bootspoiler next week.
So all is not lost as its gone to another enthusiastic owner, Im really looking forward to it being repaired and ready to drive!
Ive started a thread about it on mx5nutz here - http://www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1...
