Toying with the idea of another cerb, I spent alot on my last one, it was £25000 ish, with house and children my now budget is a little less !! Been looking at the silver cerb in the classifieds with the red interior,P117 CDP , its been there a while ,love the colours, the chassis pics I've received are ok , ish, it's not prestine but it is 15 odd years old. But a cerb with almost 70000 on the clock, what problems could I expect? Some people are scarred off tvr by lack of use ! Definatley not the case here, should I expect an expensive rebuild in the immediate future? Decisions? Help?

From what I can gather, it'd worth checking thickness of shims on the tappets.. With mileage these end up thinner, to the point of needing a top end rebuild. Very badly worded, but hope it makes sense..

On stripping my 15 year old engine head gaskets had rotted away though the fire rings were good.

Maybe a call to tvr power, could be an idea to get it done anyway , wonder how much it costs?

Thanks, hows your chassis on that age of car?

Not to good, looked like the chassis on the wheeler dealers car. Now rebuilt.
Original powder coat from the factory was as to be expected for a 98 car.

Always a gamble regardless of mileage IMO I have a friend running a Cerb all year round with 73K on the clock and all we have done in the year he's had it is strip and refit the starter and fit a new throttle cable, it's been perfect and points again towards much these cars like to be used !

Thanks for the comments, so it seems it a trip to a tvr garage with the owner for an inspection, if he agrees to that. And a gamble on a 70000 cerb ? What to do ????

The only extra thing over any other Cerb is the wear to the engine.. The rest is age/wear and tear that would effect a low miler as well.

I've had my 4.5 Cerb about 18 months. Mileage is 78,000 and (touch wood) no engine problems (and none in service history with its previous owners). However, was speaking to another 4.5 owner last month on a run and he had just had just had an engine rebuild : His car had only got 30,000 on the clock. So I dont think the cars age/ mileage is the only factor.

Last service by APM, just give Andy a call. He will be honest.

IMO it all depends on what you want the car for. If you're only looking to keep for a summer or two, then just stay on top of the regular maintenance and sell for not much less than bought for. If its a long term keeper, then you'll need to dress the long term jobs to keep her going.

I bought my cerb in Apr 2011 (so long ago already!), 1997 4.5 with 97k on the clock no re-build. Engine was pulling 380-390hp, but it really needed a refresh, as others said the shim thickness was marginal and an APM service found 2 shims had shattered and not all bits were recovered. Previous owner used her as she was meant to be used, so not a surprise and was budgeted for. The chassis corrosion wasn't however!!

But as I say, I want to keep her long term, so am prepared to spend to get her perfect.
