The king is dead, long live the king! The paddles aren't attached to the steering column? WTF?
So if you wanna change gear mid corner, you still have to take your hands off the wheel or have it in automatic!
It would seem there are some strange people in Porsche's GT team...
In agreement with the article, I'd happily sacrifice a few tenths off 0-60 times or a second or two off the lap time if I feel I've worked for it and got the enjoyment of using a soddin' manual!
I know the PDK's quicker, gives you less to worry about on track other than lines, throttle and braking. I drove both back to back at Silverstone, but I enjoyed the stick more...
Anyone else think (hope) the RS will have a manual option?

I would agree with Porsche fixed paddles are far easier to operate when cornering, my M3 had paddles on the steering wheel and I found them confusing at times, far easier in my opinion when they are fixed, as in a GT-R or Scuderia.

Sounds like an epic car. Agree with sentiment of the article.
Preuninger seems to deliberately ignore the primary reason some are bemoaning the lack of manual ie not that manual's objectively better, it's not, it's slower etc etc but it is objectively more involving (synchronous movement of feet and arm vs fingertip movement) and for many this is subjectively more enjoyable even if it is slower.
Doesn't stop me wanting one though.

cheers mate, thanks for posting. Is it stick or twist with your car then?

The actual sound of the new engine pulling hard to 9000rpm seems to be fairly elusive so far, I wonder if Porsche are saving the best until last....

I am totally confused by this statement. So if you wanna change gear mid corner, you still have to take your hands off the wheel or have it in automatic!

The paddles are not attached to the column in the Carrera either and it makes total sense. For most driving your hands should stay in the same place on the wheel unless you get seriously crossed up. Makes changing gear mid corner perfectly simple and correct. If the paddles were attached to the column you would then be releasing the wheel and unsettling the car.

To grab the next gear, you can pull one of the steering-column paddles, which feel heftier than those of a regular 911. Or, if you're in the middle of a turn, sideways and arms crossed up, you'll want to use the console shifter, because the paddles aren't fixed to the steering column. The paddles are not attached to the column in the Carrera either and it makes total sense. indeed! The way this reads to me is that the paddles are on the dash, ie do not turn with the wheel. Perhaps it's his wording and I should've said wheel not column.
If they are attached to the wheel, I apologise for any confusion, but I blame the ambiguous journo...

Only a complete idiot would want to change gear mid corner. So if you wanna change gear mid corner, you still have to take your hands off the wheel or have it in automatic!

But osnt that one of the major usp's of pdk, so smooth no unsettling of the car?
Anyway, review number one and they are liking it but ultimately bemoaning the lack of a manual shift. The notion of having to keep modernising and moving forwards on the technology front is not convincing. I think the customer is discerning enough to want a choice at least. The manual 'box was one of the last differentiators they had, next the engine will go midships and the car will blend into the rest of competiton. I'll laugh my rear end off if the next 458 is a manual :-)
