Bought myself a nice new bike at the end of last summer. A private sale on ebay but only used once, which I believe looking at the tyers, etc.



I waited and waited until the sun shone, keeping it inside a nice warm house, looking lovely.

The day finally arrives. Yet all to soon, literally less than 100 yards up the road, I am sprawled on the tarmac wondering what on earth has happened.

Apparently the mounting bracket for the gear change mechanism sheared off, mechanism in the wheel, me and bike on the floor. I walk home, bike at my side.

Very unlikely that the mech hanger just shears off of its own accord. Usual problem is that the rear mech is badly adjusted, overshifts into the spokes, an that quickly becomes a big mess. If the bike's been dropped at some point and the hangar is slightly bent, that makes it more likely to happen, as it puts the bottom of the cage closer to the spokes to start with.

But anyway, new hangar and rear mech should sort it.

It has happened to me twice, once due to the conditions I was riding in (Ridgeway, heavy clay/chalk - chain eventually clogged up and dragged the mech sideways into the wheel). Also happened on one of my road bikes last year, turned out the reason was that the two grub screws that hold the hanger to the frame came loose, one shift too many and the mech went into the wheel.

I am fairly meticulous when it comes to looking after my bikes but never used to check the grub screws on the hanger, I now use a spot of blue screw adhesive on them and check them once a month.

I had a mech hanger go on my mountain bike on Exmoor. Five miles from the car, and mostly uphill through mud.

I now carry a spare whenever I ride.

I did a London to Paris ride last week and this happened to 4 of the riders on that I think.

4 out of about 115 riders sounds quite a lot to me, not sure why so many though.

Dérailleurs getting bent when bikes are leant against each other would be my guess.

Or has the derailleur been mashed?

New mech and chain as well as hanger, and £20 for fitting (that bit seems very reasonable).

That is probably right. For some reason I didn't think about storage while in transit or over night.

Poorly adjusted limit screw would be my guess and that the other rides it was close, and just this time it may have gone too far....
