Hi, boring i know but i have noticed coolant leaking at the rear, under/near the gearbox. Obviously it might be coming from somewhere else but just wondered if anybody had experienced anything similar?

Cheers Ed

Isn't there a copper washer on the blead bolt that goes I would check that first. JCT quoted a crazy price to fix it, washer about 80p, did it myself.

As above, there are drain bolts with washers at both sides at the rear, have a look there first, try backing them off slightly and re-tightening first before removing them completely and fitting new ones.

Have a look here...

A thread on Rennlist was started yesterday after some contacted the "National Highway Traffic Safety Administration" to complain about coolant hoses failing / leaking being a common problem and a known issue.

I can't find the quote now but one was from a Porsche North America source saying that they weren't aware of the problem but would look into it. Of course they weren't aware, just like the recent GT3 intake problems!! It was mentioned that the NHTSA were going to launch an official investigation.

Anyway, the thread is now at 25 pages with people listing their failures!!

I'm not holding my breath but lets hope if the sh!t hits the fan then thier might be a recall to get them fixed here.

I hope your problem isn't a biggie.

Cheers,
Martin

I had coolant leaks when I bought mine which took several months to finally track down and solve.

At one point, I could see coolant dripping from one of those drain bolts, and I was convinced that was the problem - but in fact, it was dripping down from higher up.

Take a look at these diagrams. They might help you understand the pipework routes.

http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-parts/996-99-05...

I recently had a coolant leak on the alloy vent return where the pipe had been rubbing against the body work. It took me a long time to track it down as when the engine was hot the coolant was evaporating. It would help if you pressurised the system when it's cold and to get the car on a ramp. The rad cap for a pressure test matches a 1998 VW cap.

As I have previously said on these pages these cars have more connections on the cooling system than the average domestic central heating system.

Looking at this mate its obviously a different issue.

As above, have a close look at the tank Ed, I understand they can cause a few headaches, never tackled this one myself but I believe it's an awkward git to replace.

Mine looks like its coming from under the plastic covers further down the car, either way its certainly not just a weep, get it booked in tomorrow for its annual service and get it fixed then.

A lot of coolant pipe spring hose clips that corrode and just break/fail on water cooled Porsches, potentially one of them has just hopefully failed...Why Porsche and other manufacturers just didn't stick with the trusted Jubilee style clips,,,God only knows!!

Unfortunately, I didn't. Car had a warranty (not OPC) so it was all taken care of by the dealer.

I do know that the cap to the expansion tank is supposed to be a common problem. I replaced mine before the cause was found.

As anticipated mate those cheap hose clips they use were basically fcked!!
Located around Gear Box.
Replaced with proper SS Jubilee clips.
