After my screen departed and having just paid £140 for a new one I'd rather it didn't happen again and so I am going to replace the plastic clips with metal ones. But at £100 a set for the Racetech ones I am sure i can get some fabricated cheaper and better rather than the fiddly screw so i wondered if anyone who has upgraded had an old one they didn't want which I could use as a template to get some made.

If so I would be very grateful.

Many thanks,
Rhys

I suggest you do a forum search for a previous screen clip thread.
I'm sure one of the posters worked out that it wouldn't be cost effective to design and machine their own clips - raceproved worked out cheaper albeit I think they were priced around £70 at the time.

As for fiddly clips: the Racetech clips are dead easy to use - particularly if you switch the Allen key bolts for butterfly bolts. Alternatively in a very recent thread on this group, a PHer manufactured his own bolt solution which looked quite neat.

I'm on a mobile otherwise I'd embed links for you, but I'm sure the search facility will reveal all....

In short: unless you have loads of spare time on your hands, and are handy with it, the chances are the Racetech clips + replacement / modified bolts will be all you need.

Neil.

I've read all the threads and seen the mods but essentially its 2 pieces of bent aluminium or stainless steel with a bolt through it for £100. I'd much rather have a Dzus fastener and make them myself, it's just that the ones on my car are holding my screen in and I use it as my main car so can't have then off for an extended period.

Thanks anyway.

I may have some somewhere, I was going to look them out and stick them on ebay, but I couldnt find them! I will have another look at the weekend (this assumes that I manage to swap the fuel pump on the Alp and still have some daylight hours left)

Trust me I looked into it, I'm an engineer with a fully stocked workshop and I couldn't do it for the price/time. I got mine from Racetech direct, they are fully machined, I also swapped out the bolts for titanium race bolts with d-links.

The problem I think with the originals is that they stretch and bend, then they let the screen move, and then as you know it exits through the back. To be honest you could strengthen the plastic ones or change both the material and the design. I have some 3d models somewhere but couldn't get the price down.

Obviously time is a factor, but excluding that you didn't think you could make them for £100 a set?? I have materials and a friend with a workshop at hand and would much rather try myself first. The bolt idea just annoys me and the harder you make something the less likely you are to do it.

Just like the roof, if its warm but grey I sometimes pause before taking it off but if it was electric I wouldn't hesitate. I want to make the screen as easily accessible as possible without it becoming a chore, which is how the bolts appear to me.

If you use some butterfly/wing bolts then I can categorically say its no more difficult than the originals, takes me about 40seconds to take my screen out and put it in the boot!

Using the bolts I could do it in about 45 seconds, I just keep a flexible shaft screwdriver in the boot with the correct bit ready installed.

OP - I have one remaining of the original plastic clips in my toolbox.

PM me if you want it.

I bought the Racetech clips and can confirm that they are pretty easy to use. They are effective too, I had 140 leptons on the Mulsanne last year and the screen stayed put.
