Thinking of getting a guitar, and am not finding the colour I want, so I am considering getting the right model for me, then getting the body resprayed to the right colour. I used to know some people who did this many years ago, and they did them in polyester (which is the right stuff) and then polished them on big buffing wheels which is how they get the factory finish.

So, anybody know anyone who is doing this now?

Andy Viccars based in Milton Keynes has set up and tweaked a number of my axes. He fixes and builds from scratch. I don't recall seeing spraying facilities at his workshop, but if he doesn't do it he will know someone who does. Worth giving him a call.
