I've been a police officer in Scotland for the last year, the job is def not what I expected and I have since had a offer to join the Scottish ambulance service in a role that I would be paid to become a paramedic over the next two years (I have always wanted to be a paramedic but the uni route has put me off) This would start in September so I have got a huge descion to make before I leave the police which is arguably a good career however I struggle to find too many positives this far.

There is one thing that is making my descion hard and that is becoming firearms in the future, I feel being on a arv in Scotland may not be the most exciting career as there is not a lot of gun crime! So my question is does anyone know how hard and how many years you would need to transfer to say the Met with the hope off joining sco19 or the equivalent in a another big English city? Is this role very popular and would I be wasting my time even considering it etc? If it would be a very hard job to join then it will make up descion about joining the ambulance service!

In my opinion your first mistake was joining the job thinking its just a good career. It's more than that. I am old bill and my best mate is a paramedic who has just completed his training. I would not swap for the world, he refers to it as dial a taxi scrote cabs.
In my experience I always leave a job where paramedics are dealing thinking "thank god that's their remit" , seems they get used and abused far more.
You'd have difficulty in transferring to an English force due to Scotland being non pace and So19 won't take you, you can't transfer arv to arv/afo/fsu, you'd only go uniform plod to uniform plod in metland. Arv isn't overly hard to get onto however with specialist roles now gaining a priority payment you'll find everyone will apply.

Your only in a year and seem like you want out...seems to always be a few who do that, get experience under your belt, build a good name for yourself in the job and you'll find doors open.

I always think that the police have lots of specialist areas that might be worth exploring - like CID or traffic.

I would be very reluctant to write it off after only one year's experience.

To transfer down south do you not just have to do a conversion course of a few weeks? We have a few guys who have transferred up from England do I thought it would e just a easy!

3 month pace conversion, he won't be able to specialise though, he'd need his probation confirmed plus a year to his new district then can specialise.

Ah okay thanks so it takes a bit longer to transfer to England from Scotland than it does the other way
