Watch out Wedgers!

Got a shock yesterday after receiving a note from my brokers asking for more information on how/where my car is kept, ahead of the renewal in a few weeks.

I keep my car outside - perhaps there are only a few of you that do this, but it won't even go through the gates to the driveway. The latter point is the source of argument between me and one of the neighbours in this block whose garden wall encroaches over the entrance to the driveway that serves all the flats here.

However, the point is this. Whilst the brokers and the insurers were quite happy to insure my car to be kept outside when I purchased it last year, they now tell me it has to be kept under cover - and that applies to all my cars, though we will possibly be able to escape with the Jag as it isn't worth that much.

I am told that ALL classic policies are going this way.

The upshot of this is that if this cannot be satisfied then I will have to go over to an 'ordinary' (not classic) policy which will cost me £698 instead of the current £260!

They say I can garage these vehicles in a garage or garages somewhere else (but they don't seem to like the sound of a barn!), though in the past I have been told that to garage my cars away from my home was not acceptable - simply because it was away from my home.

Is this a fix, a con? I think so. Their excuse seems to be related to the value of the cars, but I'm just thinking of all those new/recent Beemers and Mercs and Jags that are parked outside all over the country. There again, even standard mid size family cars now cost around £15,000!

I know we have had threads about insurance in the past, but would all those with good insurance deals please post your suggestions. Otherwise, any comments welcome.

Maybe the 'mystery' SEAC will have to be sold, along with the Ferrari. And as for the Jensen I'm supposedly buying today - well, forget it.

I just hate being screwed!

Gnaaaaaaaargh!

Hi Firefox,
Know what you mean about the insurance. I can't figure out why but one of our policies (for a Mog Minor - don't laugh - doesn't cover it if it is stolen from our house when not parked in a garage at night; whereas the other policy for my wedge does cover theft when not parked in my garage. Can't for the life of me work out the logic behind it but the real mystery is that they are both insured with the same company! (Footman James)Perhaps I should try and find out. (It has never occurred to me that anyone would want to take the mog!)

By the way, love your taste in cars... SEAC, prancing 400i, Jag, Jensen...
Did you know that there is an Italian sports car meeting day at Brooklands Historic race track / museum (Surrey) on Sunday? Not difficult to get to if you don't mind tearing up the M25. There is a thread about it on the events forum.

Thanks Nads -

Would be good to go to Brooklands meeting as it would be nice to see the old track and where my dad worked all those years ago.

Bit costly blasting all the way to Weybridge in the Ferrari though. Can't see myself going - especially as it is supposed to be raining tomorrow - but may reconsider.

cheers!

Here's a link just in case you change your mind...

They have some interesting events. I always go to the motorsport day early in the year and every year they ask if I will park the humble Tasmin on display when I arrive! One year this caused a Renault Alpine A10 Turbo to burn his rubber in anger because he was behind me and asked to follow but they turned him away! I could understand his feelings though because there was a display of classic rally Alpines in the same area! (Not to mention the fact that his car has much greater racing pedigree and sheer speed than a 2.8 wedge.
Made me laugh though!
Oh and by the way, Brooklands now has a Concorde too. Haven't yet been to see it and not yet sure if they have started putting it back together yet after its transport down the motorway.

My insurance states car is to be garaged if I am at home, if away I can park anywhere. Dont leave the car uninsured if its not in use, last year I had an off road cover for very little, cant remember offhand, my bikes costs about £10 per year off road.

When I was looking for insurance 18 months ago for the Tasmin, I couldn't get anyone to quote on the car unless it was garaged. If the car had been standard then there were some that would quote, but the combination of modifications and not being garaged was a no go.
