Any ideas how many xx optical zoom this lens might have, and how much it would cost?

hmm, looks like a 500mm or 600mm. The x rating is focal length/35, so 14x or 17x. Plus a 1.3 crop if it's a 1D.

So it's not actually a zoom anything, but a prime telephoto. Re cost, several £K I think.

Depends where you shop - WarehouseExpress do the 500mm for £4700 and the 600mm is a mere snip at £6k.

There you go - just saved you £1.5k!

Also, on 35mm, I always thought that 50mm was "real size", so wouldn't a 500mm lens be the equivalent of a 10x zoom?

Zoom is a lens that has a range of focal lengths (e.g., 70-200mm), a fixed lens is called a prime, and a telephoto lens is simply a long lens (usually more than 70mm in 35mm world).

Hi Andy, yes a zoom lens is adjustable between focal lengths i.e. 17-40mm, 28-70mm, 28-300mm. 100-400mm etc. A prime lens is a fixed focal length 14mm, 50mm, 200mm etc. Telephoto usual refers to a long lens or longer than a standard or normal field of view. For full frame 35mm the stadard lens is 50mm so anything above would be telephoto. Canon class everything above 300mm 2.8 as super telephoto.
Must go for that sometime, cheers.

If you can justify it, it has to be done Then you can measure your lenses in pukka mm and not X's like the compact folk I don't think there's much the Photography folk here don't know.

Actually, I intentionally quoted list price for added shock value

I don't know why 35mm is used as the x rating, but it is. It's a nonsense scheme invented by marketing people for consumer cameras.

I didn't know it was. I thought it just meant the zoom ratio, ie 70-210mm is a 3x zoom. My little Olympus is 5.8-17.4mm, which is also 3x!

But you could also use '3x' to mean 3x lifesize, which is well into macro. That's why IMHO it's always best to quote focal length in mm, so you know exactly where you are.

What is the 35mm equiv of your Olympus zoom?

35-105mm. It's not remarkable by compact standards but if the going gets tough I can always get the DSLR howitzer out
One thing I'm very pleased with is the macro performance: it was already very good but the Mju410 has a 'Super Macro' setting in the menu that gets the field of view down to about 25mm wide!! No idea how it works though.
