The rusty rear grills on my vantage made me cringe every time i saw them. Having had a look about it seemed a bit must of a task to remove the grills so i decided to paint them in situ.

before

the tools

used a wheel detailing brush as that seems to be the best for the job as i wanted to rub the paint on more than paint it if that makes sense.

just see white spirit to remove any where you may have gone over while its still damp.

result

time take.... 10 mins max.

I was actually just looking in to this very problem during the week and researching for suitable paint.
Lunablack recommended using POR-15 which looks the best paint to inhibit the existing rust.

The solution you have shown is the way to go, no faffing about having to remove lights bumper etc, etc
to get the meshes off.
You can also go for a diffferent colour ie silver (depending on your car colour) to contrast the mesh against the diffuser

Excellent post, although in my case my plan to do this very job has been put back due to some paint bubbles on the bottom of my drivers door.

Dear Dr Bez,
Any chance some day you will be able to produce a £100K car that uses materials and paint that don't rust or paint bubble?

gave them a quick wire brush 1st, missed that bit out.

If they need doing again in 12 months time its a quick and simple task.

funny you should mention other colours. I also had silver and yellow in my tool box... i had to stop myself!

For such a simple thing it looks so much better!

did the same to mine a few years ago, made a world of difference to appearance

also worth doing when wheels off, if your service place dosent do it, paint the brake disc hubs silver so they look like new . Some places include this in the 10K service, if they are doing a thorough job. Nothing worse than having new discs front or rear and the others are rusty
