I don't have a bible, just checking, I can see two bolts holding the alternator in place. Without talking backwards, i'll just ask how do you remove said alternator and then replace it again tensioning belt as you go? Thanks.

Is yours a serpentine engine or does it have the early "V" belt?

The Serp engines have a tensioner that tensions the belt automatically (unless you have one of the John Eales alternator mounts)...

15mm spanner on the tension pulley bolt, with the spanner set in the upright position, push it away from you, it is spring loaded so will move quite easily, then just remove the belt.

The alternator is only held in place by the 2 bolts that you can see, then remove the wires and away it will come.

Be careful not to touch earth with the spanner when undoing the live wire (red) or best bet, disconnect the battery

It's a serpentine, thanks boys. That sounds like what I thought. Cheers Andav. Mine is still darkened by the oil that used to splash allover the place when every gasket and more used to leak!
Bugs me so I'm going to clean err polish it up. thanks again, always best to check even the seemingly obvious jobs before throwing spanners at it, 15 mm thanks I'll even have the right spanner in my hand! Will an old loose adjustable do!!! He he he.

slacken the nuts for the cables before removing the mounting bolts, and most definately disconnect the battery.

Will do on both accounts. At this rate I shall do a fine job!

I'm not sure if this is a bit anal but I've just replaced the PS bottle and air flow meter jubilee clips for new ones so that now every one in the engine bay is new, sad but it makes me happy anyway.

While I'm confessing I even polished the AFM with a modellers drill and tiny attachments, well satisfying when I look through the slat in the Bonet!
Again thanks for the experience.

Nothing sad about wanting everything clean and shiney, A tarnished clip stands out like a sore thumb when everything else is sorted. You have spent too much time and money getting it all sorted to leave a few clips crappy. smile

Jamie I like your style sir, yep these two clips have been jumping out at me for wks now. Attention to detail that's the way.

I'm going to touch up the chassis with White hammerite smooth here and there and I'm really happy with the car. Drop links and a gearbox bush to do and she's close to sorted.

Yep, I've got a bit OCD with the engine bay too, had a bit of time on my hands one Sunday, so I removed the flame trap, removed the grey paint and mirror polished it!

It's mild steel so could really do with a coat of lacquer to retain the finish.
