The real "oldies2 only used the clutch for pulling away. Every other shift was clutchless. Also these real oldies only had 5 or 6 speeds anyway. Some may have had an Eaton 2 speed rear axle, which was just like a splitter effectively.

Handballing bags of potatoes all.day long.
Nostalgia aint what its cracked up to be....

I know a fellow who had a J registered (1992) six wheel Foden, which had a crash box!

I drive artic's and there are some right relic's still on the road! along with some tractor units manufacturers seem to have kept producing for years despite being outdated! I saw a W plate ERF EC11 the other day.

don't get me wrong im not knocking the older motors, in fact id prefer to drive one that the MAN TGX I have to suffer now!

when I worked in trailer parts one of our customers was Bassett Roadways (Tittensor) and they did full rebuilds on older trucks

and kept using them

That looks like a Jennings cab on a Foden chassis -

Presumably chosen to allow 3 seats to be fitted - the breweries had a rule about crew numbers IIRC

Strictly speaking, a constant mesh box rather than a true crash box - but get the revs right and it would change far faster and with less force needed than a synchro -
