Removed the worst of it, but the remainder will not budge with detailer spray or a finger nail. Are there any home brew solutions or do I have to buy some Autoglym Tar remover, or some such product?!

A decent hand polish should remove the remainder, then wax the surface, otherwise time to machine polish.
