Another thread about the never ending sound debate.

I think I'm going to sleeve my box and leave all cats in place.

Had a drive of a lovely example of our cars today, twin of mine, same year sme milage same colour and spec, only a few months apart in age, and resides in my town, funky weird odd!
The point is we went in his first with sleeved exhaust, sounded great and not to loud, ok then we went in mine with standard pipe ,,,,,,, just as loud!!! Deeper almost? I'm proper confused now because I expected to notice his being louder. It's a different sound but not noticeably louder!

Sleeved seems to speed up the flow out the back resulting in a more pops and bangs per second type sound, another thing it sounded different to another sleeved example I've heard!??! I like the lazy way mine sounds, a V8 slow burble, is it me or did the sleeved sound more like a V10, sort of more revs or pops per second on the same revs.

There like two different cars if you go by sound! It makes a huge difference to lots of sonics, subtle but changes the character alot.

So here's the problem. If I sleeve mine will that deep slow rumble change to a higher pitch, well that's what it seems, subtle but there!
I suppose the answer is in getting dirty and finding out. Anybody got a sleeved pipe they want rid of, I think I want to keep mine intact.
So you gents who have sleeved pipes could you give me your conclusions on the noise levels and the sound changes if any detected from the original set up. Ta

Just do it, for what it costs it is sooo worth it. The only problem is that once you get it done you wil want it to be louder.

Any louder I'll have to work 11am to 3pm only or I'll wake the world. It's addictive or what. Aaarrgh maybe my ears are gone. I'm gonna record both cars and study the noise, his car sounded bloody fab but I also have a love of my sound so need to be sure.

Don't worry me like that Alan. I fully expect my car to be louder when I sleeve it otherwise I'm not doing it.

Is your exhaust system non-standard at the moment because you say it's currently very loud.

Then again, my car might be quite quiet as it doesn't have an engine attached at the other end. frown

I do love mine - might possibly get it "cherry bombed" at some point just to take the edge off but - TBH - I want the old girl louder ... was gonna take main cats out but will probably get a CliveF Y-Piece later in the year and whack it on after the MOT in October... biggrin

This is why I posted the thread because it's competely thrown me, mine was 94dbs at Bedford, static test. Now another sleeved car that day was101dbs I think! It did sound louder, but now I think of it not that much louder, so maybe it's me expecting quite a leap in the level of noice, from 94 to 100 which doesn't exist. Roof was off when we did drives so that's another issue! I like my Harley idleness, if the car loses that I'd be devastated, lol lol lol. I'm sure the sound guru at tvr was some 60's drug fuelled hippy who'd worked out what frequency he needed to trance you with, your messing with the gods when changing a cars sound. It's chemistry.
I'll do back to back tests with our cars and see what we detect. I don't want to sleeve it to then have to un sleeve it, bloody nonsense!

It's those poxy pops and bangs that gets you having to have it. I did really enjoy the sound of his car so it's really hard to choose!

I just can't understand the fact it wasn't over loud, that's the point which is good!
Yes Rich I'll bell you errrr later today and we will have to compare properly.
Funny because when you left I did think that's def louder, lol.

Isn't it the most outrageous discovery Rich, I'm gob smacked two cars identical in everyway 13 years old and now living only a couple of miles apart. The milage thing on the cars is just nuts.
I read the book Christine long before the film,,,,,,, I'm getting freaked out now!
Cool man we can compare chassis, engine numbers etc,

I have a proper recording studio on my phone, we can do a contolled test and see if it can pick up the difference.

Will post the results here to clear this saga up, well between these two cars anyway!

Now imagine if I have mine sleeved ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, will they sound the same?

Spooky.

Alun, don't forget if you get rid of the cats you will gain bhp.j

Can you remember mine, standard exhaust with no cats, loud enough IMHO.

Hi, Were you inside the car or behind, as mine is sleeved and sounds fantastic from the drivers seat and sounded absolutly magnificent when i got a friend to drive it. ithink when you are inside all the noise is behind you, so it sounds quieter. mine is definately louder since sleeving and free'er revving with pre cats out. (Ill take that decatted y piece of your hands if/when you dont want it anymore smile )

Something isnt right here - My 450 is sleeved and I have installed a rally style intercom so I can talk to my passenger if we are on a long trip (and to save me arriving deaf!) . Even on tick over its flipping loud. Difference between it being standard and sleeved was immense , no way you could say it sounds anything like a standard system , especially at idle when its way way louder.

Measured at 117dB at ~4500 RPM a while back.....

All cynics!!!! I sleeved it myself with my own fair hands, fully sleeved leaving only stubs of the old perforated pipes to weld to and then repacked with the wool, normal driving its fine, give it the beans and it snarls, not sure what its going to be like when the Clive Y and precats get done tho, maybe too much, but I am leaving that while the fine weather is here in case manifold bolts snap etc

Well I write some garbage. Listened to Sheels car again today A900ss dont worry it was way louder than a standard pipe.
Peter I'm turning weird because I'm prepared to forsake bhp for sound only. I do so much leasure driving that it's vital I'm happy with the day to day sound.

I'm thinking half sleeved all cats in place and go from there! I'll make sure box can be opened up again so I can go full de cat in the future.

I half sleeved mine recently. Just cut the perf pipes in the middle and welded in the straight pipes in the forward section and re-packed.
It is a bit louder than standard but not excessively so, more the tone of the sound has changed. Sounds much better when warmed up than cold, nicer tickover, more audible pops and bangs and more sporty at higher revs.

The difference is not as dramatic as I thought it was going to be, but then I still have all the cats in. I think if I ever open the box again I will fully sleeve it.
