So, the big thaw is in full flow here in the Colorado mountains, and I got a little excited. I'm running on Michelin pilot sports which aren't exactly mud and snow rated.

Here's the album - http://imgur.com/a/bTVFR

So, I would like some advice on tyres. I would be happy to get some wheels as well and just swap over when i'm going off road. What are the best wheel and tyre combination for snow and deep mud ruts like this? I imagine I can't go too small in rim size because of the brake discs on the front?

Help much appreciated.

19" rims are the smallest you can go to due to the Brembo brakes... So get yourself a set of those to begin with. As for rubber, don't go wide! 255s are all you need and if it's for general trails like those, General AT2s or even Pirelli Scorpions should be fine.

However, what would probably be a better investment is a days professional training. They'll teach you all those tricks, assessing the track, gear selection, when to use momentum, steering for grip, blah, blah... Thing is, no matter how good the cars, you can't break the rules of physics.

You need a set of General At's. You can get them in 20 inch if you want to keep your current alloy's.

Decent all rounder tyre with much better wear rates than the road tyres you have fitted.

Or you can drop to 19s and fit At's or Duratrac's. Both are good off road tyres, the Dura's are more off road biased and have better self cleaning ability and get better traction in mud than the At from my own experiences.

Thanks for the advice. When you say better wear rate, are you saying that if I use them all year round they will last longer than the Michelins? Any downside to using them on road?

From forum and friends views, the AT on the Disco3, ( LR3 to those in the colonies.. hehe ) they handle just as well on road as a standard tyre, don't suffer in the rain unless you really are being a tt with it.

They get at minimum, 35,000 miles from them, with 40+ well known and one person managing 60k from one set.

I have Duratrac's, and apart from a slight increase in road noise and a dip of 3mpg over the road tyres, i can't fault them in dry, wet, snowy and muddy conditions.

Did an "Elk test" with them in the wet with only 20 miles on them, tried 4 times at 30mph, some tyre squeal and stability control kicking in as it should, otherwise the tyres griped and turned with no issues.

Considering you've got a 4.2 Supercharged there, I'd probably look to using the Michelins for most of the day-to-day stuff and then pop something different on when 'playing'!!

Stop being sensible. This is no time or place for such mature grown up ideas.

He clearly is looking for an excuse to make a modern day Camel Trophy Range Rover... I'm helping him.

I appreciate the help!

In all seriousness though, being a lazy bd, I think I'd just like one set all year round. So when winter comes along, I think I'll probably take your advice on the ATs.

The Michelins have only done 2k so I think I'll get some use out of them first!

Plenty of time then before winter, smile

I would google the general AT, read the reviews and see if they suit your needs.
There will likely be a larger off road market for tyres etc in the US so should have a good range of tyres to suit your needs.

I would put Cooper Zeon LTZs on that all day long!

Superb tyre and I like to DRIVE my cars on road as well as needing performance off road.

You think LTZs are better than BFF ATs?

I've had BFG ATs on LR 90s for years and am getting bored with them. I need something with wet weather grip on 18" rims that is reasonably good off road too and with 200bhp in my Landy and Bilsteins all round, find the traction control kicking in on bends a lot... Thoughts?

It fascinates me when people do this. Especially as a first post...

Why? It's a straightforward question?

Yes, but it was asked four and a half years ago.

And I'm doing the same kind of research so wanted to ask and see if anyone had any further opinions? Isn't that what a forum is for?

FWiW, on one set of rims on my RRS I run a set of GG ATs and find them to be a reasonable compromise.

Don't go thinking that they're the best off road tyre because they aren't and you will still find yourself relying on the car to sort out the tyres' lack of ultimate traction in tricky areas.

Also, don't be fooled into thinking that they are the same as a proper tarmac tyre because they come up wanting in some ways.
Increased noise, increased mpg, longer stopping distances and more alarmingly a real tendency for understeer on a wet road. You can't be too greedy with entry speed when it's raining.

But as a way of affording a road biased car a little extra confidence when tackling ground away from the tarmac they are fine, but just not a specialist in any particular area.

It’s more customary to start a new thread for a new topic smile

You are asking about different tyres, on a different Vehcile for a different type of use in a different country to that of the opening post.

And this thread is old. It’s from 2013. That’s what the comment was aimed at. Not your question, just where you choose to ask it smile

In answer. It depends what sort of tyre you want. Anything AT or MT will be a compromise on road. Especially in the wet. However suspension and diff mods may also help if you are spinning a wheel while cornering.

Why don't you start a new thread with your current question?
