I recently bought a new car. I am in the process of getting my private registration from my old car transferred onto my new car. The problem is that I work away a lot and am rarely home these days. The buyer wants to buy the car ASAP. He lives local so is there anyway I can send away the necessary forms to transfer the reg, sell him the car with the private plates still on and when all the new paperwork comes through, meet up with him, swap plates and give him all the new paperwork?

My other issue is that with my new car, I also need to register it in my name at the same time. I bought the car from a garage and they gave me the V5 (signed by the last owner) but the new keeper supplement was stamped in their name as they taxed the car for me.

So, any ideas on how to proceed?

There's a thread from a week or two ago on SP&L how someone lost their plate like this.

Just sell the car lock stock and barrel when your admin is up to speed.
Any other way is just risk and hassle.

Brave. Been there on the selling side and there was a few days where it looked like II wouldnt get it back. Buyer came through in the end though

You'd be better selling once it has the age related plate back on again tbh

You can start the transfer (or retention) and let the buyer know to expect a delay in getting the paperwork.

Once you get back the updated Road Tax and MoT you can give to the new owner. V5 will take a further week or so.

Once you get the V5 back you advise DVLA or change of keeper.

Don't do it.
Did this on my last car trusting the buyer as he said he would sort the plate for me. He is a lotus specialist in Essex.
He sounded very trustworthy when buying my car hence why I let the car go with my plate on it.
I was in the same situation as you with regards to being busy.
To cut a long story short he stitched me up and it cost me nearly a £1000 to buy my plate back off him.

Don't trust anyone. Get the plate on retention and then sell the car.
I learned the hard way.
