Has anyone ever handed a car back early on motability?

We have had it almost one year, but are not enjoying the scheme.

They motability people are very nice, and so is the car, but it's not working out for us.

We clean and polish it more than any car we have ever had, almost to the point of obsession, we won't take the dog in it, and we are afraid to get it dirty with our shooting, archery, and fishing gear.

We are also afraid of damaging it when putting the wife's mobility scooter in it.

We want to go back to a shed 4x4, but don't know how to go about handing back, the motability website seems scarce on info about this.

They allow reasonable wear and tear so scuffs from a mobility scooter won't be a problem, neither will normal nicks and dents from use.

You can hand it back early but need to speak to them and explain why as technically you entered into a 3 year lease agreement.

My mum handed hers back half way through as she had pretty much lost the ability to drive and they were great , absolutely hassle free. She simply sent them a letter explaining the reasons and was asked to drop it off at the dealer a couple of weeks later.

speak to the guy/girl at the dealer who specialises in the motability scheme, am sure you must have dealt with them originally. my step dad died last year mid point on the car in his name, i helped my mum with the process, totally hassle free to be honest. i think the dealers like them back, usually low miles, condition obviously dependent on who had it.

he took care of all the paperwork, gave it a 5 minute check and that was that. spotted it on the forecourt above book price a week later, sold just after.

cant see you having any issues.

To be honest, I wouldn't hand it back. And you dont have to treat it like a garage queen. Motab fully expect the car to come back with wear and tear. I have seen some absolute shockers come back. The trade, in general love Motab cars, a few dings and a cheeky valet aside, mechanically they tend to be spot on. It is also very rare for any amount of damage to cause Motab to refuse your business in the future.

Besides, they make one heck of a profit on their business, so a few quid spent on recon isn't a biggie.

•and yes, I know they are a 'not for profit' organisation and don't make a profit but those mega annual parties and the head office on The South Bank don't pay for themselves. wink

Christ, when I was looking for a focus for the Mrs I must have viewed about 20 of them and the ex motability ones were literally hammered!

Piss stains and ciggy burns on the seats, every panel battered, scuffs everywhere.....most we're low mileage but had been treated appallingly.

I wouldn't be too worried OP.

englisharcher,I can't really understand, from what you have said, why you would want to come out of the scheme, apart from being worried about a bit of damage from your wife's scooter?

If the only thing that you are worried about is scooter damage then don't worry as Motability expect damage from scooters and chairs and won't penalise you for it.

Do you really want to go from a new car that is fully funded, including insurance, that is unlikely to let you down and if it does you will have the back up of a fully funded hire car to a shed that you will have to pay insurance, servicing and repair costs on that also may not be totally reliable?

The Motability scheme is great and if your circumstances dictate then you should take full advantage of it.
