Brand new Chimaeras for sale.. anyone know the history?

Just checking out Autotrader when I came across two unregistered Chimaeras for sale:

Cars both have old style lights and yet have apparently only been dry stored since 2001? Also have odd boot lid third brake light. Any ideas?

That's a UK sized aperture so no reason why not.

Compared to what though?

A new 4.0 in 2001 was around 35k. Throw in a few options like this one has and it's easily pushing 40k, which in today's money is over 56k.

Seems pretty cheap if you look at it that way?

has anyone else noticed the very early door buttons and plenum badges?

Bizzare - could be a lot older than they look - maybe cross-over cars from 1996.

Yes, definitely the same ones. Interesting history but having bought a 'garage queen' as my second Chimaera (it had covered 8k miles in 8 years) I would agree with some of the posts above that the cars are likely to need quite a bit of tlc by the new owner. Now I use the car regularly it is fine but early on I had all sorts of issues...

They are Malasian built cars. Both have aircon fitted. When I inspected them for a client they had been stuck in a bonded warehouse in Nicosia since they were imported new to the island by a guy who was trying to setup a TVR dealership over there. Back then the luxury goods tax to bring in expensive cars stood at over 100%, and a further 10k or so for registration. There were no takers for the cars, so they sat in storage. The grey one had no back window and had suffered a bit of water damage. Both cars were reported to have been started regularly and moved around the warehouse. I fitted batteries to them both, turned the engines over with the plugs out. The grey one then fired straight up and ran superbly, the blue one wouldn't start as the fuel pump was inoperative. They were like new underneath.Neither car had VAT paid, (which was payable at the new car rate) but that must have been paid if they have appeared in the uk.

Isn't there a problem registering new old stock cars because they don't comply with current legislation?
