Competition exhaust with no cat

Is a competition exhaust with no cat a major issue when it comes to MOT, road legality....? The car I'm looking at has just had 12 months MOT - via a 'Caterham friendly garage'.... Is this a fairly standard practice?

I'm sure I've read on here somewhere something about people temporarily fitting a 'silencer with cat' just for the MOT - is that an expensive option??? (apologies for any duplication .... but in typical fashion can't find the original thread!).

Any thoughts/experiences welcome....

It depends on the age of the car. If it is recent then it will struggle to get through an MOT with no cat.

If you compete with it, MSA rules are that if it was made with a cat, then one must be fitted.

Thanks Steve, it's a '99 Roadsport - as far as I know the Comp exhaust is on the original factory build sheet... though I'd need to check?

Anything post 97 needs a Cat for definite. Kit built cars prior to that are OK without. Factory built cars since 1994 also need a cat.

You need to find a friendly MOT centre who will shove the probe up another conveniently positioned car when they do the cat test, or you can tell them that the shortness of the exhaust system will (over time) burn their probe out - apparently that is true.
