My starter motor has decided to stop engaging properly and just spins. Does anyone know:

a) what the starter motor is (manufacturer, other fitments etc), and

b) how much a new one costs.

It seems to be reasonably accessible beneath the airbox so I thought I'd swap it myself.

Thanks.

u sure your battery is fully charged ? sounds like a non engaging bendix thing to me... on previous cars it's usually been not enough oomph through the spline gear into the fly wheel.....

The battery is fine. It seems to engage about 1 time in 5, but then makes a nasty noise when the engine starts.

ok.. it's just you'll be surprised.. it still 'starts' but pretty flat. If you've not charged it up it could be worth a go ? People kept telling me it was the battery one time and since the car started sometimes I though it was bollocks. eventually charged it right up with the accumate and voila! no probs any more.

sounds like motor is working though, but maybe bendix is getting stuck or not engaging on flywheel properly.

My old 300zx this happened with. The bendix gear has a sort of clutch in in which is supposed to make it not turn until it has engaged then lock (difficult to explain) and mine has buggered up so that it wasn't working properly. Motor, etc was all fine, just the bendix gearing/clutch.

Got a scrappy one for 20 quid. I'd suggest a scrappy one would be fine as it's not usually something that goes quick ?

Cheers Stu. I'll find out what the starter comes from and get a new unit. The battery was new in June so should still be ok.

If mine ever does this I intend to fit an air start to scare everyone

Air start?
How about cartridge start?
BANG! Broom!
Starter is relaced by a 'combustion chamber' into which a blank 12 bore cartridge is placed. The expanding gasses turn over the engine by way of a piston acting on the flywheel.

I think the starter motor is made by Bosch. I was told when I had a new one fitted that this type of starter motor was originaly intended for a tractor. I thought it was a joke at first

think mine is going a simalar way. seems to labour at first before fully spinning and starting (battery fully charged too) get an awful noise sometimes like slipping belt i guess, been told that most likely the starter drying out as isnt used much etc! might take it out and have it looked at/rebuilt!
