I fancy one of these.

Imagine doing nasi goreng, pad thai and chow mein in the garden this summer instead of grilling sausages on an inadequate gas barbecue.

Would a cast iron griddle on the bbq not achive much the same effect but be at least a third of the price?

My parents have something similar for use in thier caravan (apologies for swearing), plugs in to thier calorgas supple and has different tops that fit above the burner so they can use it as a BBQ or a wok. Works quite well.

Have you just posted the same thing exactly 24 hrs later??

Many "inadequate" gas bbq's have side burners that you can sit a wok on if that takes your fancy. No need for a separate toy.

I have one of these.. far hotter than anything else you can get, very basic and rudimentary especially when lighting it, however it is excellent particularly with a round bottomed wok!..

Try Googling 'rocket stove'.

You can buy them, but also make them for free if you have some clean edged bricks around.

If you make one properly and have dry fuel it'd give you a smokin' wok. The 'chimney' draws the flames up and sucks in air over the fuel at the bottom which burns even hotter. They can roar-up really efficiently.

Bit of trial and error needed but fun.

That's only a 2.5kw output. I think you need 6 plus to obtain searing temperatures.

Have to endorse your outlook though Pferdestarkers. I've done 'streetfood' style stuff instead of traditional BBQ fare before and it went down a treat. Slow roasted pork in some of the Indonesian spice pastes finished off on the BBQ, satay sticks, Malay curries, sticky rice, spicy noodle dishes, all fantastic in the garden with a beer.

ETA google 'babi guling' for the pork dish.

Thanks Cap'! Yes I get a little tired of the sausage and burger route to outdoor cooking and in truth find the smoker for pork butts too labour-intensive.

I think a bit of inside prep of veg, rice, noodles and seasonings followed by a rocket burner blast on the patio will make for some interesting afternoons over the summer.
