I have seen these HD projectors on Ebay for £150-250.

Does anyone have one, what are they like?

Be interesting to see what the Lumens level is and also how long the bulb lasts, as these are the things which normally dictate the costs involved....

Just out of curiosity what sort of Lumen level should be considered for say a domestic environment, curtains open or closed? I suppose image size plays an important role as well.

None of those are HD projectors. They can all take a HD signal but the native resolution is 800x600.

The native resolution of that one is 1024x768, so better but still not full HD (1920x1080).

I've not seen full HD for less than about £7-800 which has been enough to put me off, as you'd get a pretty nice TV for that kind of money.

The other issue with these cheap projectors is that they are often more geared to being 'data' projectors rather than for (moving) video. The motion may be poor and the colour temperature will be too high (to make the image look brighter). Better to buy a decent used 'proper' HD one (even if it's 720p) than one of these cheap ones.

While you can get a decent TV for £800, even a 65" TV doesn't impress me these days since I'm used to a nearly 10' wide screen. However, I did spend a little bit more than £800 on the projector, video processor, anamorphic lens and a decent screen...well worth it IMHO, but the room makes a massive difference to the picture quality too; which is my next upgrade.

IMHO it's not a 'home cinema' without a projector, just a big telly. smile

Hehe, you'd be blown away by my current setup of a free 32" CRT then! I did look at replacing it, but as I only watch the occasional DVD i couldn't justify the expense of a full hd projector. It would nice to have something other than a tv as the focal point of the room though!

my projector is over 10 years old so in terms of how good the image is , it must be poor by todays standards.

but for sheer wow factor a normal tv just does not match up for home cinema .

That's not current 3d standard either.

It is the old red/green system not shuttered / polarised of today's systems

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Optoma-HD600X-LV-Widescree...

A bit more than £150-250 as its at £379, its 720HD and has got some very good reviews.
Most people say you wont find anything as good for this price.

Horses for courses really...no point if you aren't going to make use of it. This time of year I find that I don't use my projector so much since I'd rather be outside if it's a nice evening.

One comment though: My projector isn't a focal point at all, because the screen is hidden away and the projector is installed as discretely as possible (for a 50cm square box).

yes, I have it set up on a celing mount, I also bought a 100 inch electric screen as I had to have it infront of a window.

Its just as reviewed on Amazon, The picture is very good in HD and it also works well in SD, the speaker is realy bad quality but with a 100 inch picture you should have surround sound anyway.

I can see the rainbow effect but it does not bother me much, I could pay an extra £3-400 for an LCD but this was at the top of my budget.
