Hit a stationary car while reversing...

Hi
I am a new driver and I have hit a parked car in my drive way while reversing at less than 1mph.I spoke to the owner of the car and i told him that i will pay for the damage and it is only a minor scratch. I offered to pay him money there and then but he said he will take it to the garage and give me a quote.
He took his car( toyota avensis) to Currie motors for a quote and currie motors emailed me a quote back.
The quote states that they will have to remove front bumper and osf wing fittings and repaint.
So the cost for paint and parts is 145 and for labour charge is 418..........!!!! so all in all with VAT the cost is 703£££££££££££!
I think the owner of the car is trying to get more money.... I offered him £250 basing on the fact that the paint and parts according to quote is 145 but then he is now asking for replacement car so I agreed and said i will pay for car rental may be 20 pounds a day but he is still not happy and he wants me to find out from garages how much labour they charge but is not willing to come to garage with me....and garage cannot provide quote....
My voluntary excess is 500 and other excess is 150.
should i just take it with insurance................

If it's that minor you could always suggest one of those "smart repair" places like Chipsaway. However the driver is well within their rights to have the car fixed to their satisfaction at a place of their choosing, especially if you don't want to take the (legally correct) route of going to the insurers.

No I dont know this person ...he was just delivering some thing. He was not in the car when this happened. I am not sure if the cost is justified. Only thing that worries me is that my premium will go up if i claim.Why are they being a willy?

Firstly well done for owning up. Seriously, you did the right thing.
I'd see if you can have a chat with the chap, and visit a couple of bodyshops with him? I'd also advise paying the garage directly for any repairs.
Of course, and as awful as it might be, insurance might be the best way if he's wanting a like for like rental etc...

I guy hit my wife's car in her works carpark a few weeks ago, the damage was minor (scratch to the rear bumper) so I got a quote from a Smart repair guy I know, he done the work for £90, great job and you cannot see any trace of the damage.Quick, easy, cheap and caused the minimum of fuss as he done the work at our home.Its definitely worth a phone call to Chipsaway or the likes.

Sounds like the garage he went to pulled his pants down but it's hard to say without photos. Do you know any local bodyshops with a good reputation? May be worth suggesting he take it there.
I certainly wouldn't be hiring cars for him either.
If he's being a complete arse, just let your insurance company sort it out - some people are simply too tiresome to deal with. Yes, it may affect your premium but given that the guy is trying to extract as much as he can from you, it may still work out cheaper to do it via insurance.
Bad luck, but just chalk it up to experience and look where you're going, even in familiar areas. Especially in familiar areas.

Get a chips away quote, if its a lot cheaper then offer him this, if he insists on the £700 then tell him its got to go through insurance, its probably as much a pain in the ass (for him) as it is for you and he may go for the chips away solution, otherwise your going to have to bite the bullet re insurance.
