This goes wrong so many times stick it on retention first

Easiest way is just get your paperwork up to speed and sell / px your car on it's original plate.

But I guess a good dealer will know how do do this as part of a normal days work.

As above, get it on retention if possible, I did it in January through the dealers, I finally got my plate on my new car 2 weeks ago!

I put mine on retention while waiting for new car and then gave certificate to dealer to directly register new car on private reg - was very quick and easy. DVLA only took about a week with paperwork.

I do 2 or 3 a week, why wouldn't you trust the dealer?

Presumably because most people don't think dealers know what they're doing.

As Mark says. This is very common if you're using a reputable dealer.

I'm very sorry sir, we passed the car onto a third party garage who mad us a bid on your trade in vehicle. We forgot to transfer the plate. It'll be ok, we'll try and track it down for you but aren't guaranteeing anything.

Well because I've lost a plate doing that.

Not you, nor do I suggest that you would in any way do this. But not everyone undertakes their business properly or sticks to their word.

What if I do the paperwork with the dealer, and then take it the DVLA myself?
