Rattling wipers
Discussion
Has anyone experienced a rattle from the wiper linkage/motor on a DB9 or similar?
I just bought and paid for a 2006 DB9 Volante, insured it, bought an expensive cover for it, ordered and paid for the carbon fibre mirror caps, door handles and taillight inserts, bought clear taillights for it, bought a private plate for it which is now registered on the car and sold my existing car, only to be told by the selling dealer, an Aston Martin Specialist, that they are now withdrawing from the sale, 2 weeks after paying for it, because the ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REMOVED to access the wiper linkage and cure the rattle.
I bought this car from a dealer in the Pistonheads classifieds.
Am I being properly shafted because they have sold at a higher price to someone else or does this sound legit?
Cheers.

If the garage is reputable (is it anAM dealer) let them do the work on the car and collect it when finished. If you have paid for it it's your car. The wiper linkage issue is then a warranty repair.
If its not an AM dealership, or very similar, leave it get your money and carry on with the hunt.
Best of luck

I'm pretty sure that this is true.Cheers.
When we bought our V8V back in 06 some of the sales patter from the dealer was telling us about the "virtual technician" that Ford brought to the party AFTER the DB9 was born.
It ran virtual component changes and highlighted collisions when replacing parts. The wiper assembly was specifically mentioned as an engine out job on the DB9.
On the V8V I can allegedly change the wiper assembly with the engine in place.
But that was a salesman telling me that!

I'm sorry but I too have heard this from somewhere. Why don't you call an authorised dealerWhen we bought our V8V back in 06 some of the sales patter from the dealer was telling us about the "virtual technician" that Ford brought to the party AFTER the DB9 was born.

If you have paid for the car and ownership is transferred to you (and you have the V5 in your name?) you are the legal owner. You have recourse to the dealer because there is a fault on the car, so they have to get that fixed for you.
Personally I'd give it back, ask for your money to be returned plus any costs you have incurred as part of taking ownership. Then go to a dealer that will treat you right, and there are a lot of them out there.
If they don't accept, then I'd seek legal advice.

If true, that is British workmanship at its best. Reminds me of my V12 XJS (yes folks, I did have an engine with the correct number of cylinders once!). The front two spark plugs were rarely changed at service due to having to remove lots of stuff (the aircon I think was one part) to get to them.

I wonder what the gig is with the V12V wipers....... that V12 sure is well lubricated and shoehorned in there

Confirmed by me dealer (AM) engine out job
Wow! I wonder what the MTBF of the wiper motor is. Can't imagine many owners being happy having to have an engine removed to replace the wiper motor, especially if not under warranty. As Peter asked, I wonder if the V12V is the same.
Check your purchase contract to see whether they really are entitled to withdraw. If they have accepted your offer to purchase the car (which seems quite likely if you paid two weeks ago), you should have a contract from which they can not withdraw. But it will depend on the wording of the document you signed.
If it wasn't for the fact it is real it would be funny.
I would image the car is yours ( your paid for it). But, why do they want to back out. Presumably they are going to have to fix it anyway? Unless they just plan to resell and hope no one notices. I would think it is in everyones interest to name the dealer!

Looking at the OP's profile, couldn't he just do it himself?
Sure, I could, but I didn't buy a car to pull the motor out and start doing major repairs. I would also get carried away and start playing with that engine once it was on the floor! If I was doing that, I would expect the price to reflect the work necessary.
I may know BMW's inside out, especially the E31 8-Series (hence my name) and E53 X5, but not the Astons, so I don't intend fiddling with the car any more than cosmetic stuff until the warranty expires.
My 15 years at Ford were many years ago so working on a Ford built Aston will be as alien as working on it after BMW's.
