Is this a scam??
Discussion
I have advertised my Peugeot on www.clubpeugeotuk.org web site with my e-mail address & phone number.
Got a not very well written e-mail saying he wants to buy it via PayPal!!!
After payment has been completed his pick up agent will collect it!!!!
he wants a reply with photo`s.
I`m sure its a scam? how does it work?
If I reply with a stupid photo of a scrapper with nonsense writing will I open a can of worms?
Advice please lads.

If in doubt ignore.
If the car is any good a genuine buyer will be along soon. Normally any one using a shipping agent and agreeing to buy without knowing the details is likely to be a scam. The details of the scam normally work themselves out as the sale progresses - there are lots of options.

So he will agree a price for the car, you will receive an email which looks like it comes from PAYPAL confirming a payment has been made for the car + an additional amount for the shipping agent, say £300.
Your contact will come back to you asking if you have received notifcation of the payment and if so, could your forward the funds to the shipping agent so he can come and collect the car.
If your stupid, you will believe its all genuine, send the shipping agent he's £300 and thats the last you will ever hear and you be down £300.
If you google your contacts name, he will no doubt show up by the previous people he has annoyed tried to con.

If you have to ask...
My failsafe way of rooting out suspect scammers is to say that the price has gone up since they emailed.
If it is a 30k car it is now 40k etc.
The scammers are the ones who bite.
Oh, yours is absolutely, positively, gilt-edged, solid-gold scamtastic
I was thinking of sending that photo of the two camels in the back of the pick up.My failsafe way of rooting out suspect scammers is to say that the price has gone up since they emailed.

Saying the car is £40K and the camels are free!!
I`ll go with the idea that the con is to get you to pay the shipping agents fee.
Or he pays with a stolen credit card, gets the car, then PayPal take the money back off you. PayPal is well iffy, read the terms & conditions, they are judge , jury etc in every case, you have agreed to this by signing up. You don't even recieve the standard protection from your credit card through PayPal.
Wouldn't even bother repliying tbh.

had the same email when selling cars as well.Your contact will come back to you asking if you have received notifcation of the payment and if so, could your forward the funds to the shipping agent so he can come and collect the car.

as others have said, who in their right mind is going to pay full price for a car without having seen it in the flesh?

totally agree with you, paypals new rules are with new accounts that they put a hold on your funds for 21 days or receive positive feedback for the ebay transaction. do they really expect people to send items on the off chance they might get their money? personally id rather lose the sale than risk it,too open for abuse!Wouldn't even bother repliying tbh.
going back a couple of years to show you how paypal don't give a toss, sent a guy a distributor,he complained he hadn't received it,i checked the carriers website to see who had signed for it,signed for by next door neighbour, paypal still found in his favour as it hadn't been delivered to the buyers address!!!! thankfully it was only £20
Last time I sold a vintage car abroad (Japan) I received an email regarding the car and broken English asking for further details and pictures. I thought perhaps some sort of scam but then complied with request. Follow up email asked if he could send an intermediary to inspect and possibly negotiate. I agree, and an intermediary turned up, inspected and negotiated. We agreed a sale on condition the car stays with me until money clears into my account. Money cleared, intermediary was a well known classic car dealer, car was collected a few weeks later.
Many thanks for all the replies. As soon as I saw this e-mail I was convinced it was dodgy, the wording,PayPal,shipping agent etc,it stunk.I have deleted it into my Phishing Scam folder.I was tempted to play the guy along, have some fun,and see what happens.I can remember some time ago on here a PH posted the correspondence he had "playing" with one of these scamers,"the back wheels have fallen off","its got the seven cylinder nine valve engine" etc etc, hilarious reading.Every time the "Buyer" just came back with the same, send me your PayPal account details.
It does put you off though as I am thinking of advertising it on a European site.I will just have to be vigilant,as said above there are plenty of genuine people out there.
Does any one want a nice Peugeot Cabriolet?
