Does anyone know if a record time exists for travelling this distance in a car. I know someone who has just completed it in 12hr 15 minutes including stops or 11hr 56 moving time in a smart car

yes I read that article however this run was done without any covert stuff , not in a porsche with customised fuelling just 2 drivers a cornish pastie each at the start and a straight run to John o groats in a smart car

I did it in about 13 hours, including stops, on a Ducati Monster 600 a few years ago. Could barely get off the bike at the end. Not something I'd want to repeat in a hurry.

Sounds like fun. that's what endurance driving is all about. Did Lands End to Lowestoft from dusk til dawn a couple of years back, not quite as far as john o groats but still quite a long way. depends what you like doing. if it was easy, it wouldnt be a challenge.

If you wanted to go to Lowestoft, you should have started at the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse.

For a purer run, I guess you should avoid the Corran ferry & drive via Glenfinnan, that would be a true west - east road trip.

Is that the most westerly point in mainland UK then?

Pretty much - there's another headland nearby that's apparently 25 yards or so further west, but there's no road access. It feels a bit end of the world-y up there, to get to the light it's a good few miles on single tracks roads & IIRC, Kilchoan is about the only significant settlement anywhere in the area. I kind of cheated when I visited it in 2005 - I drove up from Glasgow to Mull on day 1, stayed over on the western edge of Mull, then toured the island & crossed over on the Tobermory - Kilchoan ferry, drove to the light then back up to the A830 around Glenfinnan & up to the Mallaig - Skye ferry for an overnight in Dunvegan. About 3 days later I made it to John O' Groats having driven round Skye & up to Durness & along the north coast. Fantastic trip that one smile
