I had a bit of a blether with an old chap ealier this week, it proved to be quite interesting.
He was ex RAF as were several of his sons or sons-in-law.
One of the sons flew Nimrods and was tasked with over-seeing their scrapping. He approached the demolishers and asked for the front 46 feet of the last airframe he flew. Presumably there was a cash settlement of some kind because there is now, on a farm somewhere in Ayrshire, 46 feet of the front end of a Nimrod. VX252 if I recall correctly.
Apparently the cockpit is "fully functional" whatever that means, with a bar and pool table in the rear section.
He had plenty of pics of the cockpit and exterior but none of the bar area.
While chatting, he mentioned I should go to The Glebe in Moffat (56 19'50.69N 3 26'46.00W)on Google Earth, enter street view and having a look around the cul-de-sac.
Sadly, he didn't mention the location of the Nimrod (and I ain't searching every farm in Ayrshire looking for it!) but it made me wonder if there are any more folk with aircraft sitting in their gardens.

Making a cockpit function, even as simple as just getting the lights, three greens and erect instruments etc isn't really a back garden project.skirk said:

I would be more than happy to have a cold war relic sat at the bottom of the garden if I had a big enough garden in the first place. Would make a very cool alternative to a tree house for the kids.
Many years ago a chap local to me did exactly this, bought a Vulcan Nose section and used it as a treehouse for his young son. The guys name was Donald Milne, and his son was Quentin, a now talented rally driver competing in the Scottish championship.

I had to relocate her to Metheringham when we moved but couldn't find time to keep up the maintenance. Got made an offer by an airfield north of Lincoln which is now her home.

Not a 911 but the ex's red Toyota Celica. Sat there for twelve months whilst she was working in another country. She took the keys and didn't want me touching it ... which is probably why it ended up towed away on a trailer! On street view the hunter has gone... and the nice 911 you had parked next to it has been replaced by a blue (modern) beetle! Quite ironic!
The other two cars were mine though ... a Jeep Cherokee and my CL55 ... both replaced now.
