Puncture Advice

Luckily only happened 500 yards from home but at the end of a nice 2 hour ride today Mrs Garyhun ran over a 5mm drill bit. It went right through tyre and inner tube and deflated instantly.

It's a knobbly ish MTB tyre. Question is can I just change the inner tube or would/should the tyre be replaced as well?

Not had a puncture caused by something so large so not sure of best approach.

^ that or one of those patches used on tubeless tyres, just to be sure.

I certainly wouldn't use it without some sort of additional patch inside the tyre, equally I wouldn't throw away a servicable tyre because of a small hole.

Tape would work, but tbh for the cost of a tyre i'd just bung a new one on.

I'll talk to the local bike shop tomorrow - guy is very honest so I'll see which of you he agrees with :-)

For what tyres cost I'd just buy another one. Chances are you get a puncture next time in the same place only you might be 10 miles from home instead!

I went over a piece of glass last year, left a 5mm stab wound in the tyre. After fixing the puncture I filled the outer hole with superglue... It's lasted well.

New tube. I wouldn't worry about the tyre unless it was seriously torn up...

Go old school - Cyclists used to carry a small piece of denim with their puncture repair kit just in case they got rip/hole in a tyre. They would just place it on the inside of the tyre before inflating.

If it was border line bad i would just buy a new tyre to stop the puncture paranoia (Thinking you have a puncture every 5 minutes)

I'd just put a patch on the inside of the tyre - just like you've done on the outside of the tube
