New Battery

Hi

My banner battery has finally stopped holding charge after 7 years of use. Can anyone advise/recommend on a new replacement and best place to buy.

Option one: straight swap

My Banner gave up after five years and I went for your option 2 from an ebay seller. I opted to keep the battery upright and made a spacer to fill the battery harness, allowing me to go back to a Banner (or alternate "conventionally sized" lead acid battery) if the NP20 doesn't play nicely.

Five months in, all is fine - it turns the motor as well as a Banner and seems happy on the Optimate conditioner.

I also purchased a powervamp battery and alluminium mount for my R500, with the idea of saving weight!

Still an full year I have not got around to fitting it!

From a completely personal POV, I really hate aftermarket stuff that people fit and looks bodged. One of the favourites I have seen many of is bodged smaller batteries. It would seem to be bodgers' heaven. So as a personal favour, please make sure that if you go aftermarket make sure the battery fitting isn't bodged.

From a technical pov, I fitted a gel battery to my K-R500 and had all sorts of starting probs. The reason seemed to be that gel lead-acids produce lots of starting current, but drops the volts too far which the MBE didn't like.

So I had to dump my very beautiful custom battery box and went back to the Banner which gave perfect starting.

Mind you some of the worst bodgery is in the aftermarket carbon bits world. Someone's carbon tunnel cover (dunno who made it) was out of bodgers' paradise. Which is very nearly a Weird Al Yankovic track. Time to take my tablets.

I ordered a lawnmower battery (online) from Tayna a couple of weeks ago. I got a 'phone call a couple of hours later letting me know that they were out of stock of the specific battery that I'd ordered, "is it OK if we substitute with the next model up for the same price ?".

It arrive 24 hours later.

I bodged in a 19ah motorcycle gel battery instead of my dying banner. It was cheaper, smaller and lighter than the banner and starts the car beautifully every time.
Mind you, I have only been using it for a bit over a month so time will tell if it keeps up.

I bought one of the BlatChat bulk-buy sealed lead acid batteries from Rally Design (identical to the Ultramax being discussed on this thread) in October 2010. It's still on the 7 and working well, but due to an immobiliser it is kept on a trickle charger when not in use.

I decided to modify the Banner tray and fit it lying down, no problems for me (1992 chassis) but I know some people have said it will not fit on top of the passenger footwell. I have just over 5mm clearance to the diagonal chassis tube.

Also in addition to the rivets which secure the tray to the top of the footwell I have also secured the tray with dome headed bolts, nylocs and penny washers as I couldn't see the rivets holding up in the event of a front end shunt and didn't want a battery flying around the engine bay.

Banner not holding charge (6 years old) changed to PV25 works and fits perfectly....

I recently fitted a brand new Banner I had dry on the shelf (after motorcycle shop filling it) into our SV and had a nasty surprise

Banner have slightly altered the depth (front to back) of the battery, and it is now 1.5CM smaller than the brackets from Caterham

So you'll have to find some way to shore up the bracket or it will be loose. As we were about to be off to join the NISe7ens run in Northern Ireland, a piece of skirting board was fitted, but now home I'll have to set about today or tomorrow mucking with a new bracket.

What about Odyssey? I´ve bought the PC625 and it turns the 2litre Duratec with no problems.
