recommend me a camera

Hi everybody

I'm looking for a compact digital camera but I have no idea where to start
I have purchased digital cameras before but it was more a of a case of that looks like it will do.


The idea is I'll be using it when I'm out on the bike and for the TT when I head down at the end of the month so video playback with sound will be required.

I'm looking to spend around £100-£150 on one.

Panasonic TZ20/25 or a Canon of some sort.
I previously had a canon A710iS and it was a great camera but they stopped making them and the replacements seem to be cheaper built. I now have a panasonic TZ30 which is a good camera but some of the video seems processed and I just prefer the Canon in many ways.

Personally I'd steer clear of Panasonic after going through 4 in the space of 2 years through mechanical issues. The sony cyber shots are very good cameras or a Nikon.

Personally I couldn't recommend them enough

If I were in the market for a consumer compact, I would head straight to Panasonic.

On that score, my panasonis packed in at a hint of sea water but dried out and the lens cover can be a bit sticky despite the slightest wipe of WD40 such that it largely behaves now. That is why I largely prefer the Canon. Something like the SX240.

Bera in mind that most cameras now have way too many mega-pixels so if you want to upload to the internet, the images can be too large and bulky. My A710iS was 7.1 MP which was about ideal and gave good quality pics even as background on my 24" computer screen.

For my money, the Canon software is better too and the way photos are numbered is easier to comprehend.

I've been looking at the panasonic lumix

looks to be not a bad camera although it is going over the budget a smidge
have any you guys had experience with this camera

I have to say that if the TZ27 is just a TZ30 (that I have) without the GPS then that is a great price but as noted, do bear in mind my own qualms on the durability. But hey, I paid about £250 for my TZ30 last year! The canon is also about £100 cheaper than last year.

I'd still look at the Canon though as it has better software. I really don't like the Panasonic software and the Canon Zoombrowser EX software is what I still use to sort my photos (though newer versions of this seem to be more basic - my copy came with the A710iS and is way better than the version I got with my SX1000).
