Technophobe wants a DVD player - what to get?

I need to get myself a DVD player, but no idea where to start... Blu Ray? Buy a Playstation or equivalent? Don't want to spend a load of cash any thoughts welcome! I have Sky Plus if that makes any difference...

For an actual DVD player - £20 from Tesco will do the job. Blu-Ray is a bit more expensive at £65. It does rather depend on whether you own DVDs or Blu-Rays though.

Thanks, I only have DVDs, was thinking Blu Ray would play both... Would a Playstation play DVDs too?

Rip the DVDs and buy something to steam them to the TV with...

blu-ray plays both. My advice would be to buy a blu-ray player that is the same brand as your TV. Job done.

Thanks, waiting for the local store to call me back, if they have one I'll buy it, job done! Well almost, still have to work out how to connect it to Sky and unbelievably I still have a video too (probably steam powered ) so will no doubt get in a muddle. Thanks for your help guys

Personally I'd go with the Pioneer BDP-150. Mainly because it's a really good player of CD, DVD and Blu-Ray. At £69.99 at Richer it's a better bet and will fit in with separates if you feel the need.

Thanks, I've reserved the first suggestion but will ask about this one too! I don't have separate speakers, but do have a decent big Toshiba TV, would CDs play through the TV speakers or would I need separate ones? Sorry to be dim! I used to have an awesome Bose surround system but that was a casualty of my divorce and I now live in a semi so not sure the neighbours would be too impressed...

What TV will you be plugging into? If it's too old it will only have SCART connectors, not HDMI required by BluRay.

If it's a Flat Screen with HDMI then you are OK. The Cheaper Blu-Ray players tend to only have HDMI Optical and Audio L/R outputs. SCART is not used. You could improve the Audio by using a Sounbdar or If you are feeling flush Richer are doing a Yamaha Package for £180 which includes a Amp and Speakers. £250 all in for the Hardware leaving you a few quid more to get stands and connector cables which I'm sure Richer would do a deal on. Or you can just enjoy the Pictures and stay with whichever player you get.

I think it should be HDMI - in fact it must be as I use Sky Plus on HDMI channel 1! I have just bought a Toshiba Blu Ray player to match the TV - only £70. Impressed by Richer sounds thanks for the recommendation. Next thing is to buy some sort of surround sound. Used to have fantastic Bose Accoustimass 15 system, not sure whether to buy Bose on Ebay or a new less expensive system? Don't want to spend over £500 inc speakers and amp...

Thanks, but having experienced a fab Bose system I'm likely to spend a bit more to hopefully get a bit more. I'm sure things have moved on since I bought the Bose system, but getting the same again on Ebay is tempting...

I suspect the Yamaha System would be superior to the Bose one by a considerable margin. BOSE aren't exactly "state of the Art" and their pricing is ridiculous.

I've just bought the same one at the same price from Argos. Decent little player, but overkill if you don't have blu-rays or a large HD TV.
