1970 2.2 911T - fun to drive?
Discussion
I'm in the intial thinking phase re. buying one of one of these to hoon around the local B/C roads up here in North Norfolk. I'm sure the 911E & 911S with the extra power would be fun but they are beyond my budget.
I know its a bit 'how longs a piece of string?' but with only 125bhp on tap will it be a fun drive?
Thanks
Piers

Strangely you'll probably find it more fun to drive than a lot of the more powerful 911s. Proper foot to the floor around corners motoring if it's set-up well.
Many years ago I had a VW Beetle with an updated engine pumping out a massive 90bhp. It was one of the most fun-to-drive, foot-in-thecarpet, B/C road cars I've owned!

I have a DB4 with an upgraded 4.7 liter engine. It is a lot more fun to drive that at "normal" speeds than my GT3 RS 4.0 at the same speeds. The issue is that with older cars you are driving them at 75% of their potential which is a lot more involving than the opposite is the case with modern cars. On track this is obviously a completely different equation.

With the early cars, the driving enjoyment comes from their relative lightness and free revving nature of some of the engines.
Can't speak for the 2.2T, but the 2.2S was brilliant with a lovely sound track. Did have a 2.4T (carbs) and it was more suited to touring that thrashing.
This is what worries me about the T versus E and S...I'll have to drive one and find out for myself. Can't speak for the 2.2T, but the 2.2S was brilliant with a lovely sound track. Did have a 2.4T (carbs) and it was more suited to touring that thrashing.
You really need to live with the car for sometime before understanding its capabilities. A brief test drive will never give you the full picture. Brakes, handling and gearbox in a 40+ year old 911 need familiarisation, but when you do, it will be a very rewarding experience. Apart from all that, they absolutely stand out in modern traffic - a really pretty little car that makes everyone smile when they see it. You wouldnt sell your beloved family pet, and an old 911 makes you feel the same way about it!
Definitely yes, it will be fun to drive. I owned a white one for two years before buying a great blood orange 2.4S. Of course the 2.4S was faster, but the 2.2T had a enough power and torque to have fun with--and arguably I had more fun driving the 2.2T (with 5 gears) on twisty roads than with the 2.4S which was quite peaky (great on cams, not so off cams).
As said earlier in this thread, early 911s are about the lightweight experience--a 3.2 will feel heavy in comparison. And this experience is quite similar irrespective of engine.

Not driven a T but I can vouch for 1970 S and most of the extra power is only available if your rev the boll@@ks off it. Just back from Center Gravity getting some Chris Franklin love on mine and it weighed in at 1067 kg with a full tank of fuel. T probably a tad lighter so goodish power to weight ratio - and a dellightfully light helm.

Quick test drive unless you're an old air cooled dub chap won't be great with a 901.
But after a week or so you'll love it.
My 18 mile 1.5 hr commute looks like this and is fine

Car is light enough small enough and cute enough to cut people up.
Silverstone at full tilt looks like this

Car is around 160bhp weltmeister roll bars and S barrels and pistons some average carbs and filters.
It sounds lovely on full tilt screaming through the stock box and ssi's
Welcome to come and see mine and drive it with me of your local?
I drive it respectfully and hard once warmed up am respectful of its limitations and we get on fine
Am considering some rear 3 point belts for the kids. I drive to the airport for work and leave it at Stansted
go shopping in it and am off to the ring with my son in it in June.
It's a peach and T's are edging towards £40k now so don't hang about too long
That does look fun..Thanks for the offer, where are you based? But after a week or so you'll love it.

Slight thread highjack here, but does anyone have experience of driving the 1974-77 2.7 models?
I am considering getting one as a classic 911 to go along my 997. Neither car would be getting used as a daily though.
Er.... Not Porsche's finest moment! Go earlier, or later SC for one of the most reliable Porsches ever. I am considering getting one as a classic 911 to go along my 997. Neither car would be getting used as a daily though.
3.2 better still.

I understand that reliability wasn't great 40 years ago (something to do with head studs and cooling?) but I would have thought that the "survivors" are past those issues now? 3.2 better still.
My question was more on the 'character' of the engine and the package as a whole. I quite like these 2.7s as they are classic enough with their chrome window frames and very basic spec, while being a bit of an underdog too.
