Due to an upcoming and unexpected house purchase I'm looking to move on my 4 month old BMW. I'm looking for a straight sale and though I've sold cars privately in the past I'm not keen on doing this with a more expensive car. I contacted a couple of local dealers and their offers are a bit on the low side.

For a laugh I plugged it into thebuyanycar and the offer is good. Now I've heard a few stories of people turning up and the offer being "adjusted" due to a squashed fly on the number plate or something but my car is as good as new. Has anyone here actually received in their hand what was quoted on the website?

It's not sneaky, they make you an offer, if you choose to accept it that's up to you, you can always decline.

A few folks get fair prices.
Majority don't.

For an example. Pick some cars out of the classifieds.
Get a quote from WBAC.com

The difference can be > £10,000

Send a weekend doing the above. Report back what you find.

Yes they do try to knock you down quite a few hundred pounds in some cases.
I occassionly collect cars for best car buyer and most of the time the cars i collect from customers that have arranged to sell the car to the above are happy with the price. Please do describe the car accurately though as all of the internet buyers will knock you back for dents, deep scratches, missing keys, missing services and missing service books ect. Just to reiterate I do not work for best car buyer i only get sent to collect cars by the company i work for so i have no direct connection with the business.

Simple really, if the offer is good and not far off what cars are going for privately (or within reasonable tolerance) then go with it.

They might try and knock you down further, they also may not.

Offer it back to the dealer you bought it from.

I sold a car recently

WBAC offered £9250 and I was warned that they will knock you down when you get the car there.
The real piss take for me was when the said that the wanted £75 to transfer the money into my account.

In the end I sold the car privately for £10k cash.

£9250 sounds like a very good offer to me then.

As said you dont have to sell to them if they adjust the price too much.

How was it a good offer?

There is no way they would have paid me £9250 and they would have charged £75 for the privilege of being stiffed.

I made an extra grand by placing an ad on free sites and in the end the buyer saw the sign I had put in the car window on my drive.

WBAC just take advantage of the weak and desperate IMHO.

Its within 10% of what you sold it for. What would a dealer have given you on it?

And not their business model at all.

A very low percentage of WBAC purchased cars actually end up being retailed by CC.

What WBAC does has to be borderline criminal IMO

Someone goes to the online checker which tells them their car is worth X

They then make an appt to have the car checked, during which X will be reduced by AT LEAST 20% and often as much as 60%

In my mind that's like advertising a car for £3000 but when you go to see it they tell you it's anything from £3600 to £5000 - it's dishonest and shouldn't be permitted.

If they're offering valuations they should honor the valuation +/- a max of 10% - if a car is worth than that they can decline to buy it rather than acting in what amounts to a dishonest manner.

Don't touch with anyone's bargepole.

It might be many things, but it is not criminal. Check your definitions. If they wave a knife in your general direction and say "sign here" it is borderline criminal.

Turning up and offering a lower price with no compulsion to agree is not borderline criminal. Just ask them to leave.

My cousin got an online price of WBAC of £2800 for a Fiesta she had. She turned up to the place, the car was checked & she came away with the £2800. She didn't have to deal with idiots of Ebay or Autotrader.

Dirty rip off thieving robdogs.

I advertised my wifes MGTF before we emigrated, a bit of interest but nothing major (middle of winter), I think it was up for about 4.5k. Thought I would try WBAC just to make it easy before I left so we could use the car right up to the last day.
The offered me 750 quid. I said no. About 30 phone calls and 200 emails later..... I emigrated, took the car with me (about 3k shippings costs) and used it for another year with the roof down 24/7 before selling for $19k (approx 12,250 gbp)

Just put my (which my mum is now running around in) old A3 into the site as she now wants a Mercedes A Class. A scout round on Ebay says it's worth about £1200.

£475.

So? How do you think they were going to make profit on it if they didn't buy it from you at a lower price than they were going to sell it for?
