Just serviced my 95 Chim, with the usual oil and filter changes, new fuel filter, air filter element, new NGK plugs and a new set of plug leads. All was well for a few hundred miles then I started getting intermitent problems, felt like fuel starvation, but no obvious signs as to why its happeming. At about the same time idling speed started going all over the place and occasionally the car just cuts out when you lift of the gas as you change gear............you dip the clutch and the revs just plummet and the engine stops. It sarts up ok either on the key or just by dropping the clutch. Just wondered if anyong had experince of similar problems. I had similar symptons on an old SAAB I had anf that turned out to be the idle control unit, which when stripped and cleaned out with solvent carb cleaner, seem ed to settle down............any ideas ????

Did you clean the stepper motor during service? Very popular to ignore this and AFAIK this is the idle control unit.

Stepper motor: If you stand in front of the car with the bonnet up look to the left had side at back of the aluminium casting (plenum chamber) sitting on top of the engine. There you should see it, a black plastic bolt head approx. 1 inch across flats with a couple of wires coming out screwed into the casting.

Fuel filter is located on chassis back left wheel arch (better seen with wheel removed) near the fuel pump (the one with two wires). Filters have an arrow on them and/or the words in/out or German equivalent (en/aus) next to the pipes.

Fitting a filter the wrong way won't prevent it operating, you wouldnt even notice. Not cleaning the Stepper Motor, however, will give you precisely the sysmptoms you are experiencing

Suggest you get Steve Heaths Bible, version 2 for Chim/Griff, has more than enough information to satisfy any challenged/unchallenged spanner jugglers.

Have a look in the passenger footwell at the fuses.
You should see a fuse holder hanging by two wires ie not attached to the main fuse board.
This allows it to get damp/dirty & the contacts corrode. On mine the fuse was all bright & shiney but the contacts in the holder were black. a new fuse holder was £1.25 took 10 min to fit & solved all the cutting out & missfiring.
