Moving back to the UK next year, thinking about bringing something back with me.

I was thinking about a VW camper but then was rather taken by the MGA.

I have one in mind 1960 Mk1, see pics.

It has a rebuilt engine, gearbox and clutch (not yet run in)

Unfortunately has red leather interior than black but at nearly $8k price difference I can live with that










There is a left hand drive one in classifieds for 30k - are they really worth that much or is he being optimistic?

Buy the one in the picture over its right hand drive and the popular colour red. You will sell it no problems when you have had your fun in the UK.

I want something that will appreciate, current cars are lotus esprit turbo and 911 carrera 3.2, both have increased in value substantially.
The mga in the pics will cost me about 18k gbp door to door, i am not really interested in driving it personally- I'm 6'5 and its a little small for me. It. Would be investment for a couple of years only

I'm 6'3" and there was loads of room for me in my MGA, lovely cars.

That's an awful shame. MGAs are great fun cars to drive but it will do it no good at all to leave it in storage. Why not buy something that you have an interest in instead? That way your investment will appreciate and you'll get some usage out of it.

I already have a 911, a lotus esprit turbo and a tvr Chimaera as my weekend toys. To be fair I will probably let the old man drive it so its not sitting in storage, more his type of thing. I cant abide cars not being used. I wanted an E type but I cant stretch to that with a new baby and I will probably be selling the 911 to fund this and maybe another car investment. Thinking early original BMW M5

You could buy a Bmw e30 M3, almost guaranteed to go up in value. The MGA's value has been very stagnant for a long time. They seem to stay at £20k for a good one. Don't be put off by the red interior it looks right in person.

Also think you will have a lot more fun in the bmw.

I'M 6 ft 5 and drive a frogeye, so you should fit in the MGA, so why not drive it?

never driven one, I have driven a few MGB's over the years and struggle in those. I am 6'5 but my issue is that despite my size I have stumpy body and very long legs (36 inside leg) - makes cars and clothes difficult! I struggle in alot of modern cars too

I prefer the look of the M5 and a fraction of the price of an M3. I will see what prices are like around xmas time- I am in no rush and xmas is always the best time to buy it seems.

A classic car left in storage is not a great investment, although if you can derive some fun from it too then at least it can be a win/win situation. I wonder about the appreciation potential of older cars like MGAs, the people who coveted these when young gradually dying off, do younger people have a burning desire to buy such an old car that dates from before they were born ?

I'm hoping the price of MGAs etc drop so I can afford a car 20-30 years older than me. I do like that red interior in the OP as well.

MGA prices will not drop. They are the last of the classic MGs built on a chassis and have a racing pedigree including Le Mans and some serious rallies. They are sweet to drive, easily tuned, there's a wealth of support for them and a thriving club should one be interested in that sort of thing, why should they drop?
